Overview

The program offers students an opportunity to explore the interrelations between nations and peoples, and to examine global politics, problems, and actors from a variety of perspectives. The program provides students with the opportunity to study in three major areas: International Security; Global Governance and Justice; and Asia’s Rising Powers. International Security explores the nature of security, conflict, and intervention in global politics. Global Governance and Justice explores the role of international institutions and regimes in the governance of complex issues. Asia’s Rising Powers explores the changing politics in the Indo-Pacific region, with particular attention to rising powers such as China and India. The program also includes a variety of approaches to citizenship and human rights, with a particular focus in the area of global citizenship. Students complete core courses in international politics and a wide range of closed electives, as well as a minor in a relevant area. The program incorporates a range of international experiences, including study tours and an international studies internship.
The Bachelor of International Studies is an AQF Level 7 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 3 years.

Academic Program Rules for Bachelor of International Studies

There shall be a Bachelor of International Studies.

Qualification Requirements

To qualify for the degree of Bachelor of International Studies, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 72 units, comprising:

  1. Core courses to the value of 18 units
  2. Closed Electives to the value of 18 units
  3. At least one minor to the value of 18 units, with no more than 6 units at Level I, at least 6 units at Level II and 6 units at Level III:
    • Asian Studies
    • Geography, Environment and Population
    • History
    • International Business
    • International Development
  4. Language studies courses to the value of at least 9 units, with not more than 6 units at Level I and at least 3 units at Level II, chosen from the following language studies disciplines:
    • Chinese Studies
    • French Studies
    • German Studies
    • Indonesian Studies
    • Italian Studies
    • Japanese Studies
    • Spanish Studies
  5. Open electives to the value of 9 units or an additional 9 units of language studies courses to complete a minor of 18 units in the chosen language.
  6. Not more than 24 units at Level I
  7. Level II and III courses to the value of at least 48 units, with at least 18 units at Level III
  8. Level II courses to the value of 6 units must be completed before commencing Level III courses

Credit in Formal Double Degree Arrangements

Bachelor of Laws
Students who have passed courses in the degree of Bachelor of Laws at the University of Adelaide will be granted credit toward the Bachelor of International Studies up to a maximum of 24 units.
The requirement to complete a minor in the Bachelor of International Studies is waived.

A students who undertakes any combination listed above may count a maximum of 24 units towards both degrees with a minimum total of 96 units (or 4 years) of study.
The requirements to complete a minor in the Bachelor of International Studies is waived.

*Exemption

International students studying a Diploma in Languages or a language major or minor in another degree are exempt from completing the mandatory language component, although may complete language units in a different language if they wish.

    To satisfy the requirements for Asian Studies Minor students must complete courses to the value of 18 units.

    A minor comprising Asian Studies courses to the value of 18 units. The minor may not be taken in the same area of study as the major. A minimum of 3 units and a maximum of 6 units must be completed at Level I, a minimum of 3 units at Level II and at least 6 units at Level III. Students must complete at least 3 units in the minor at Level I before undertaking courses at Level II, and 3 units at Level II before undertaking courses at Level III.
