Overview

Linguistics is the study of language and Applied Linguistics is the study of language use in human affairs as we understand it in all facets of human life. Language is one of the most complex human phenomena, yet we mostly take it for granted as something we are aware of, but that operates below our level of consciousness. Linguistics brings the study of language itself to the conscious level, and applied linguistics attempts to bring this study to all domains of human life where language is considered as important. In this way we examine the role of language in human communication; the way people use language to interact with one another and their environment, the relationship between language and culture and the place of language in the life of an individual community and society.
The Master of Arts (Applied Linguistics) program provides grounding for students both in the study of language as an object and then how we apply the study to develop a greater understanding of its relevance and importance in different fields. Interests can be pursued in areas such as endangered languages, language revival, language policy and planning, language documentation, language teaching and learning, health care communication and sport. Students are encouraged to investigate language in all arenas of personal and professional interest.
Applicants for admission to the program based on the completion of the Graduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics must have qualified for the Graduate Diploma with a minimum GPA of 5.0.
The Master of Arts (Applied Linguistics) is an AQF Level 9 Masters Conversion qualification with a standard full-time duration of 2 years.
