Overview

This program is designed to provide a professional qualification for those wanting to enhance their research and scientific skills and who are embarking on a career in surgery. The objective of the program is to give students a solid grounding in the academic side of surgery with emphasis on developing the skills of writing, research, attracting funding and promoting scholarly activity. Program content includes presentations, audio and visual teaching materials, publications and group discussion, and is delivered using traditional lecture and tutorial methodologies with small tutorial groups which enable a high level of student-teacher interaction. The program also has a large research component with mentoring from experienced research supervisors.
Students should be aware that they will be required to provide a research project overview and attend an interview with the Program Director or Program Coordinator to be considered for admission to the program.
The Master of Surgical Science is an AQF Level 9 Masters Extension qualification with a standard full-time duration of 1 year or part-time over 2 years.
Professional requirements:

  1. applicants will have a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), or equivalent
  2. applicants should be eligible to hold full AHPRA registration
  3. applicants should be employed as a resident medical officer or registrar in an Australian public hospital, achieved a satisfactory interview, obtained satisfactory references, and approval by the Program Coordinator or their nominee
  4. applicants should be able to attend weekly tutorials in Adelaide
VISA requirements:
  1. permanent residency or citizenship – to be a domestic applicant
    or
  2. hold a Temporary Business (Long Stay) Visa (Subclass 457) – to be an international applicant

Academic Program Rules for Master of Surgical Science

There shall be a Master of Surgical Science.

Qualification Requirements

To qualify for the degree of the Master of Surgical Science, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following courses with a combined total of not less than 24 units:

  1. Core courses to the value of 6 units
  2. Research equivalent courses to the value of 12 units in the form of a research project
  3. Work based training / extra mural studies to the value of 6 units
