Overview
The Bachelor of Languages (Honours) is a one year program that includes advanced coursework and a research project in which students produce an extended piece of work (thesis) on a topic chosen in consultation with an academic supervisor.
An Honours year provides students with the opportunity to develop advanced proficiency in a particular language as well as an enhanced knowledge of the culture(s) in which that language is spoken. Students who complete the program will thus develop a sophisticated knowledge of language as a system and of its role in society, as well as a greater appreciation of cultural diversity and of cultural difference. The program also requires students to undertake and practise advanced research skills, thereby learning new techniques and theoretical approaches. This will broaden their skill base and provide a competitive edge in the job market.
The Honours year is considered to be a year of full-time study and regular attendance at classes is required. It is possible to take Honours over two years if special personal or medical circumstances apply.
Honours is a pathway for entry to a Higher Degree by Research at the Master and Doctor of Philosophy levels, and is also valued by many employers.
The Bachelor of Languages (Honours) is an AQF Level 8 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 1 year.

Qualification Requirements
To qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Languages (Honours), the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of:
One major to the value of 24 units from the following:
- Honours Chinese Studies
- Honours French Studies
- Honours German Studies
- Honours Japanese Studies
- Honours Spanish Studies
Combined Honours
Combined Honours in two languages, comprising 6 units of core courses from each language and a 12 unit thesis, may also be undertaken with the approval of both language departments.

To satisfy the requirements for Chinese Studies Honours students must complete courses to the value of 24 units.
