Overview

The Master of Teaching program prepares students for teaching in secondary schools. Successful completion of this program satisfies the academic requirements to apply for registration with the Teacher Registration Board of South Australia. It also caters for those entering post-secondary educational institutions and those professions that may benefit from a study of the theory and practice of education. The program provides a systematic study of issues in education such as professional practice; learning and motivation; the social context of education; student-teacher interaction; and curriculum and assessment in the Australian context. It incorporates two full-time supervised teaching blocks in South Australian schools of 65 days total. Students are also required to undertake studies in curriculum areas related to undergraduate qualifications and teaching specialisations. Quotas are applied in general school teaching curriculum areas. 

The Master of Teaching is an AQF Level 9 qualification and is equivalent to a standard 2 years of full-time study. The accelerated program is able to be completed by students in a full-time duration of 1.5 years. It is taught in quadmesters.

Academic Program Rules for Master of Teaching

There shall be a Master of Teaching.

Qualification Requirements

To qualify for the Master of Teaching, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 48 units comprising:

a. Core courses to the value of 39 units. This includes Curriculum and Methodology (C&M)  courses from two teaching areas to the value of 12 units, which may include up to 6 units from the General Curriculum and Methodology courses as approved by the School. Students are required to take both C&M Part A and the matching Part B course.
b. Electives to the value of 9 units.


 

Graduation Requirement

Students are advised of the following requirements from 2017. The Australian Government has recently introduced the Literacy and Numeracy Test for all initial teacher education (ITE) students to ensure that they have the high level of personal literacy and numeracy skills required of teachers. The test is a single, national instrument designed to assess elements of an individual's literacy and numeracy skills and will be used to demonstrate that ITE graduates are in the top 30 per cent of the population for literacy and numeracy. All South Australian students commencing an ITE program after 1 January 2017 will be required to meet the benchmark prior to graduation.
