Overview
The Bachelor of Music (Advanced) is intended to provide an enhanced learning experience for high achieving students. Students will benefit from more intensive individual tuition, access to advanced classes in their major and special opportunities for higher level study through masterclasses and professional placements. It is anticipated that such an offering will attract higher-level students seeking a more challenging and rewarding learning experience.
The program provides the intensive professional training required for employment in the music industry. It seeks to provide a challenging and stimulating learning environment in which all students may achieve their full potential in their chosen major. It aims to develop educated, flexible and imaginative graduates who possess the knowledge and skills required to function effectively in a wide range of professional contexts. The program provides students with the option to undertake specialised study in either Classical Performance, Jazz Performance, Music Education or Creative Practice (a broad area of study that includes courses in Music Composition, Popular Music and Sonic Arts).
The Bachelor of Music (Advanced) is an AQF Level 7 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 3 years.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate a coherent and maturing understanding of, and where appropriate, an advanced technical and musical facility with, the range of skills and contexts that underlie the creation and/or performance of music, and its theoretical and contextual underpinnings.
- Identify and solve a range of problems in performing, analysing, evaluating, and/or generating ideas about music and music literature, by means of research involving primary and secondary source material, and appropriate research methodologies.
- Communicate effectively and eloquently, and present complex ideas about a range of music and music-making activities in various spoken and written formats.
- Work with others to a high level to explore, create and present music, ideas and information, and to collectively negotiate and lead the development of solutions to problems as they arise.
- Demonstrate a strong sense of career readiness, a mature awareness of professional standards, and a range of leadership skills appropriate for beginning professional practice, including proficiency in: 5.1 information technology skills to facilitate access, management and storage of relevant material, and to disseminate and communicate effectively with others 5.2 time management and organisational skills, planning and decision making processes, as characterised by independent, robust, and professional leadership.
- Demonstrate an advanced ability to recognise, discern and reflect on social, cultural and ethical issues in music and music-making, and operate with an ethical awareness and professional integrity in a range of social, cultural and linguistic contexts.
- Demonstrate a mature capacity for self-appraisal and reflective thinking, and demonstrate an aware sense of respect and mutual responsibility in sustaining productive relationships as appropriate to beginning professional practice.
Conditions
Condition of admission: All applicants must attend and pass an audition / interview and a musicianship test. Applicants may audition for more than one instrument or major.
Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Executive Dean or dlegate before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.
Program Maximum Duration: As specified in Table 1 of the Coursework Academic Programs Policy, this program must be completed within a Maximum Duration which includes any periods of non-enrolment, leave of absence or approved study at other institutions for credit towards a Program.
Condition of Continuing Enrolment: Students enrolled in this program must maintain a minimum semester GPA of 5.0 throughout their enrolment or will be required to transfer to the Bachelor of Music.
Re-audition to enrol in a Performance course after a break: A student who is eligible in any year to enrol in a performance course and who fails to do so, and who wishes to enrol in one of these courses in a subsequent year, will be required to re-audition and to reach a minimum standard for enrolment in the course in question before being authorised to enrol in that course.
And/or
A student who takes leave from a performance course for one semester and is unable to show continuity of learning on their instrument may be required to re-audition on their instrument. Approval is required from the Head of Area.
External performances / engagements: The Elder Coservatorium's Head of Undergraduate Programs will determine whether students shall acknowledge the name of the School or its staff in any public performance / engagement in which they participate.
Academic Program Rules for Bachelor of Music (Advanced)
There shall be a Bachelor of Music (Advanced).
Qualification Requirements
To qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Music (Advanced), the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 72 units.
- Level I courses not exceeding 30 units including MUSGEN 1301 Life in Music
- Level III courses to the value of at least 24 units
- Sufficient courses at Level II to make the total of 72 units
- At least one major from the following:
- Classical Performance
- Creative Practice
- Jazz Performance
- Music Education
- A minimum of 12 units at Level I before undertaking courses at Level II
- A minimum of 6 units at Level II before undertaking courses at Level III.
