Overview
The Bachelor of Music (Honours) is open to suitably qualified students who wish to undertake advanced and intensive studies in one of the following specialisations: Classical Performance (Instrumental performance or vocal performance or choral conducting or instrumental conducting), Jazz Performance (instrumental or vocal), Music Education, Creative Practice or Musicology. It is assumed that Honours applicants will have undertaken appropriate study in their specialisation during their Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Music (Advanced) degree, or will be able to demonstrate an assumed equivalency as required.
The Bachelor of Music (Honours) is an AQF Level 8 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 1 year.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate a coherent and mature understanding of, and where appropriate, an advanced technical and musical facility to plan and execute project work, including performance and/or a piece of research and scholarship with some independence in one or more specialisation or areas of practice.
- Identify and solve complex problems in performing, analysing, evaluating, and/or generating ideas about music and music literature, by means of research involving primary and secondary source material, and appropriate research principles methodologies with intellectual independence.
- Communicate effectively and present clear and coherent ideas about a range of music and music-making activities in various spoken and written formats to a variety of audiences.
- Work with others to explore, create and present music, ideas and information, and to collectively and responsibly negotiate solutions to problems as they arise.
- Demonstrate initiative, career readiness and leadership skills appropriate for beginning professional practice, including proficiency in: 5.1 information technology skills to facilitate access, management and storage of relevant material, and to disseminate and communicate effectively with others 5.2 time management and organisational skills, advanced planning and decision making processes, as characterised by independent, robust, and professional leadership.
- Demonstrate an ability to recognise and reflect on social, cultural and ethical issues in music and music-making, and operate with an ethical awareness, judgement and professional integrity in a range of social, cultural and linguistic contexts.
- Demonstrate a well-developed capacity in self-appraisal and reflective thinking, and demonstrate respect and mutual responsibility in sustaining productive relationships as appropriate to beginning professional practice.
Conditions
Condition of enrolment
Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Executive Dean or delegate before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.
Maximum Program Duration: As specified in Table 1 of the Coursework Academic Programs Policy, this program must be completed within a Maximum Duration which includes any periods of non-enrolment, leave of absence or approved study at other institutions for credit towards a Program.

There shall be a Bachelor of Music (Honours).
Qualification Requirements
To qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Music (Honours), the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 24 units, comprising:
- A (specialisation) to the value of 24 units from the following:
- Classical Performance
- Creative Practice
- Jazz Performance
- Music Education
- Musicology

Classical Performance specialisation
To satisfy the requirements for Classical Performance specialisation students must complete courses to the value of 24 units.
