Overview

The Bachelor of Sociology offers a range of courses which will combine deep discipline knowledge of sociology with advanced quantitative data analysis skills. Key to the program is the acquisition of sociological knowledge and techniques, including quantitative data analysis.

The Bachelor of Sociology is an AQF Level 7 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 3 years.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Understand a broad and coherent body of knowledge in the discipline of sociology, with in-depth knowledge of relevant concepts, theories, skills, debates, emerging issues and methods of inquiry.
  2. Apply creative and critical thinking to identify and suggest solutions to social problems within complex political, economic and cultural contexts.
  3. Transmit knowledge, skills and ideas to others effectively in a range of spoken and written modes and formats within the relevant disciplinary and professional sociological contexts in a variety of situations.
  4. Demonstrate career readiness and leadership skills appropriate for beginning professional practice, including lifelong learning skills characterised by academic rigour, self-direction and intellectual independence.
  5. Identify the sociological issues underpinning differing perspectives and their ethical implications.
  6. Operate with personal and professional integrity in a range of social and cultural contexts.
  7. Manage their own personal capabilities through processes of self-appraisal, and demonstrate respect and mutual responsibility in sustaining productive relationships.

Conditions

Condition of enrolment
Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Executive Dean or delegate before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.

Program Maximum Duration: As specified in Table 1 of the Coursework Academic Programs Policy, this program must be completed within a Maximum Duration which includes any periods of non-enrolment, leave of absence or approved study at other institutions for credit towards a Program. 
 

Academic Program Rules for Bachelor of Sociology

There shall be a Bachelor of Sociology.

Qualification Requirements

To qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Sociology, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 72 units:

  1. Core courses to the value of 27 units, including a course chosen from the Core Competency list to the value of 3 units
  2. Sociology Closed Electives to the value of 6 units
  3. Elective courses to the value of up to 30 units
  4. Broadening Electives to the value of up to 9 units excluding courses from the following subject areas: SOCI; OR
  5. If studying a Major to the value of 24 units, complete Open elective courses to the value of 15 units in lieu of the courses required in (3) and (4); OR
  6. If studying a Minor to the value of 18 units, complete Open elective courses to the value of 21 units in lieu of the courses required in (3) and (4); OR
  7. If studying a Minor to the value of 21 units, complete Open elective courses to the value of 18 units in lieu of the courses required in (3) and (4).

    To satisfy the requirements for Sociology Closed Electives students must complete courses to the value of 6 units.

    To satisfy the requirements for Open/Broadening Elective Courses students must complete courses to the value of 39 units.

    Open Elective

    Open Elective courses up to the value of 30 units from any undergraduate courses offered by the University that are available to the student.

    Broadening Elective

    Broadening Electives up to the value of 9 units, can be chosen from any discipline other than courses with the subject areas: SOCI.

    You have the option to undertake a major in Criminology, Gender Studies, International Relations, Management or Politics, in lieu of elective courses to the value of 24 units.
    OR
    You have the option to undertake a minor in Criminology, Gender Studies, International Relations, Management, Politics or Public Health in lieu of elective courses to the value of 18 units.
    OR
    You have the option to undertake a minor in Psychology in lieu of elective courses to the value of 21 units.

    Broadening is not required when undertaking a major or minor.
