Overview

The Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) with Bachelor of Music double degree prepares students for teaching in secondary schools. It is designed for students who are beginning tertiary study. The primary focus in the first three years of the double degree is on completing two teaching areas for teaching up to Year 12 level.
 
Students are required to have completed the requirements of the discipline degree to be eligible to enrol into the fourth year of the program.

The Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) with Bachelor of Music is an AQF Level 7 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 4 years.

The program is offered as a double degree only and students are required to complete both awards at the same time.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Apply knowledge and understanding of how students learn and how this may affect their learning outcomes in the Secondary School years.
  2. Know discipline-specific content and how to teach it. Know discipline-specific curriculum across two or more curriculum areas, and how to teach it.
  3. Design, implement and evaluate effective learning and teaching strategies for diverse, adolescent learners in Secondary Schools.
  4. Apply knowledge of relevant policy and practice requirements to create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments.
  5. Assess, provide feedback and report on student learning.
  6. Know about the important role of professional learning. Know about, and apply relevant professional standards with teaching professionals, parents/carers and the community.
  7. Design and conduct classroom action research.
  8. Apply the AITSL Professional Standards for Teachers at a 'graduate' level.

Conditions

Condition of Admission
Criminal History Clearance: Students must be able to demonstrate a successful National Criminal History Record Check (NCHRC) as it is required by teacher employment authorities in Australia and South Australia. A Working With Children Check (WWCC) is required prior to undertaking any professional experience/practicum placements which involves contact with minors (under 18 years of age). These placements are compulsory. International students will be required to obtain a certificate from their home country.

All applicants must attend and pass an audition / interview and a musicianship test. Applicants may audition for more than one instrument or major. 

Condition of Enrolment
Program Maximum Duration: As specified in Table 1 of the Coursework Academic Programs Policy, this program must be completed within a Maximum Duration which includes any periods of non-enrolment, leave of absence or approved study at other institutions for credit towards a Program. 

Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Executive Dean or delegate before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.

Re-audition to enrol in a Performance course after a break: A student who is eligible in any year to enrol in a performance course and who fails to do so, and who wishes to enrol in one of these courses in a subsequent year, will be required to re-audition and to reach a minimum standard for enrolment in the course in question before being authorised to enrol in that course.
And / Or
A student who takes leave from a performance course for one semester and is unable to show continuity of learning on their instrument may be required to re-audition on their instrument. Approval is required from the Head of Area.

External performances / engagement: The Elder Conservatorium’s Head of Undergraduate Programs will determine whether students shall acknowledge the name of the School of its staff in any public performance / engagement in which they participate. 

Inherent requirements: Students are required to acknowledge their understanding of the University of Adelaide Bachelor of Teaching program requirements, specifically with regards to Professional Experience Placements – see https://able.adelaide.edu.au/education/study 

Condition of Continuing Enrolment
LANTITE: progression into the fourth year of the program is subject to the successful completion of both the literacy and numeracy components of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE).

Academic Program Rules for Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) with Bachelor of Music

There shall be a Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) with Bachelor of Music.

Qualification Requirements

To qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) with Bachelor of Music, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 96 units, comprising:

1. Core courses to the value of 36 units from the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary).
2. Courses to the value of 6 units from the Bachelor of Teaching Curriculum and Pedagogy courses.
3. Elective courses to the value of 12 units to complete a Second Teaching Area. The electives must be sequential and selected from courses listed in the academic program rules for the degree of Bachelor of Arts, excluding any Music courses.

* Students who wish to undertake a second teaching area in a language are advised to seek advice from the Faculty prior to enrolling.

4. Courses to the value of 42 units from the Bachelor of Music, including:
  • Level I Music Core courses to the value of 18 units
  • Level II Music Core courses to the value of 12 units
  • Level III Music Core courses to the value of 12 units including a Capstone course to the value of 6 units.
