Overview
The program comprises performance tuition through preparation of a major recital and minor recital plus a negotiated project. The recitals provide the opportunity to present a program of works in the major study and may include solo works, chamber music, orchestral material, concerti or accompaniment. The negotiated projects allow the student to select an activity that complements their major study with negotiated learning outcomes and modes of assessment.
The Graduate Diploma in Music Performance is an AQF Level 8 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 1 year.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Understand the range of contexts that underlie the creation and/or performance of music, and its theoretical underpinnings. Exhibit professional level facility in working within the genres and styles associated with the musical specialisation concerned.
- Identify and solve problems related to performing, analysing, evaluating, and/or generating ideas about music and music literature, by means of research involving primary and secondary source material, and appropriate research methodologies.
- Communicate effectively and present ideas about a range of music and music-making activities in various spoken and written formats, demonstrating a thorough understanding of the history, theory and structure of music and its role as an expressive art.
- Collaborative skills and adaptability to explore, create and present music, ideas and information with others, and to collectively leverage integrated subject understanding to negotiate solutions for complex problems as they arise.
- Career readiness including proficiency in relevant technology as well as managerial, negotiation and organisational skills. Thorough understanding of the professional musical world, its musical standards and the context in which the specialisation concerned operates.
- Recognise and reflect on social, cultural and ethical issues in music and music-making, and operate with an ethical awareness and professional integrity in a range of social, cultural and linguistic contexts.
- Capacity for self-appraisal and reflective thinking as well as respect and responsibility for sustained and productive relationships as appropriate for professional practice.
Conditions
Condition of admission: Students will be required to audition.
Program Maximum Duration: As specified in Table 1 of the Coursework Academic Programs Policy, this program must be completed within a Maximum Duration which includes any periods of non-enrolment, leave of absence or approved study at other institutions for credit towards a Program.
Interruption of program:
Students must apply for permission from the Executive Dean or delegate before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.
Academic Program Rules for Graduate Diploma in Music Performance
There shall be a Graduate Diploma in Music Performance.
Qualification Requirements
To qualify for the Graduate Diploma in Music Performance, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 24 units, comprising:
