Overview
This program will provide students with a background in the physical sciences, chemical engineering core disciplines, integrated design skills and research training. All Engineering students will complete a common first year before branching out into their disciplines and majors. The first two years of the program are spent developing an understanding of the foundation courses of chemical engineering, which are increasingly put into practice in the third and fourth years via major design, research and experimental projects. The program offers majors in Minerals Processing, Pharmaceutical Engineering, Food and Beverage Engineering, Defence Enterprise as well as an interdisciplinary major in Renewable Energy.
The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Chemical) is an AQF Level 08 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 4 years. This program is accredited by Engineers Australia and graduates of the program qualify for professional membership of Engineers Australia and Institute of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) (UK).
Program Learning Outcomes
- Contribute to the design of creative, sustainable, economic and safe solutions, which satisfy the objectives of clients and stakeholders.
- Demonstrate a broad, theory-based understanding of the mathematical, natural and physical sciences underpinning engineering practice, and evaluate the differences between theoretical and applied system behaviour.
- Demonstrate a conceptual understanding of the computer and information sciences that underpin engineering practice.
- Demonstrate a substantial and contemporary body-of-knowledge of engineering methods, tools and processes for a specific discipline, complemented by relevant knowledge from related disciplines.
- Professionally and ethically conduct themselves and their work, respecting the communities and cultural norms within which that work is carried out.
- Communicate objectively and effectively, in written and oral forms, to lay and expert audiences.
- Apply critical and independent thinking to make sound judgements, based on evidence, theory and logical reasoning.

Conditions
Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Executive Dean or delegate before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.
Program Maximum Duration: As specified in Table 1 of the Coursework Academic Programs Policy, this program must be completed within a Maximum Duration which includes any periods of non-enrolment, leave of absence or approved study at other institutions for credit towards a Program.
Defence Enterprise Major: Students admitted to the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Chemical) will be invited to apply for the opportunity to undertake the Defence Enterprise major. Only students eligible for an Australian security clearance, who currently have a GPA of at least 5.0 will be eligible. Confirmation of the opportunity to undertake the major will be sent at the end of the semester prior to a student’s commencement of the first course restricted to the major, STEM 2500 Defence Industry and Security.
Academic Program Rules for Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Chemical)
There shall be a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Chemical).
Qualification Requirements
To qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Chemical, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 96 units, comprising:
- Core courses up to the value of 84 units
- Elective courses up to the value of 12 units
- The option of a major in one of the following:
- Defence Enterprise
- Food and Beverage Engineering
- Minerals Processing
- Pharmaceutical Engineering
- Renewable Energy
- A total of 8 weeks of approved engineering work placement is required. Students will need to enrol into the ENG 3100 Engineering Internship UG (0 units) course to complete this requirement.
- Unless exempted, International students are required to take ENG 1011 Introduction to Engineering EAL in lieu of ENG 1001 Introduction to Engineering
