Overview
The Bachelor of Music Theatre will provide the intensive training and the physical and intellectual skills necessary for a career in live theatre entertainment. The study of music theatre builds broad cultural and inter-disciplinary awareness, self-confidence, communication and collaborative skills, emotional intelligence, physical presence, creativity and analytical insight.
All applicants must attend and pass an audition and a musicianship test.
The Bachelor of Music Theatre is an AQF Level 7 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 3 years.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Exhibit vocal and musical skills that demonstrate a synthesis of voice, body and mind in an authentic sense of individual expression and creativity.
- Employ a broad range of acting knowledge including sophisticated and layered characterisation that delivers dramatic complexity with ease and simplicity.
- Demonstrate the acquisition of advanced technical proficiency in voice and speech, including the production of articulate and expressive text, superior connection to text and the nuances of language and meaning.
- Demonstrate the acquisition of advanced technical proficiency in dance and movement with a developed understanding of styles required for music theatre performance.
- Demonstrate creative judgment and critical thinking in identifying and solving performance problems and structuring material for presentation and performance.
- Demonstrate ethical and professional conduct and the ability to work collaboratively and in partnership as an ensemble member in the practice of music theatre.
- Demonstrate business acumen and industry readiness in a professional environment through audition technique, resume preparation and professional interactions.
Conditions
Condition of Admission
Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Head of Undergraduate Program before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.
Condition of Enrolment
External performances / engagements: The Head of Undergraduate Program will determine whether students shall acknowledge the name of the School or its staff in any public performance / engagement in which they participate.
Program Maximum Duration: As specified in Table 1 of the Coursework Academic Programs Policy, this program must be completed within a Maximum Duration which includes any periods of non-enrolment, leave of absence or approved study at other institutions for credit towards a Program.
Condition of Continuing Enrolment
Students must re-audition to enrol in a Performance course after a break: A student who is eligible in any year to enrol in a performance course and who fails to do so, and who wishes to enrol in one of these courses in a subsequent year, will be required to re-audition and to reach a minimum standard for enrolment in the course in question before being authorised to enrol in that course.
And / Or
A student who takes leave from a performance course for one semester and is unable to show continuity of learning on their instrument may be required to re-audition on their instrument. Approval is required from the Head of Area.
Academic Program Rules for Bachelor of Music Theatre
There shall be a Bachelor of Music Theatre.
Qualification Requirements
To qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Music Theatre the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 72 units:
- Level I courses not exceeding 24 units which must include a course chosen from the Core Competency List to the value of 3 units
- Level II courses not exceeding 24 units
- Level III courses not exceeding 24 units
- Broadening Electives to the value of 12 units
