Overview

The Bachelor of Science (Veterinary Bioscience) forms the first part of the veterinary science program. Students satisfactorily completing this program (including the 12 weeks of Work Based Learning / Extra Mural Studies) will gain direct entry into the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program with students who complete both programs being eligible to register and practice as veterinarians. The first year of the program involves studies at both North Terrace and Roseworthy campuses, while later year levels of the program will be based at the Roseworthy campus.

The Bachelor of Science (Veterinary Bioscience) is an AQF Level 7 program with a standard full-time duration of 3 years.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate professional behaviours including the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively and inclusively with others, work safely as an individual or in a team setting, and engage in self-management and planning for personal well-being and development.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the scientific method and the ability to critically evaluate literature using an evidence-based approach as independent and self-directed learners.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge and skills in veterinary bioscience, including: 3.1 in the underpinning core sciences of chemistry, biology, physics, statistics, biochemistry, and genetics 3.2 in the preclinical sciences that describe normal structure and function of a range of domestic animal species and wildlife, and their husbandry, behaviour and nutrition 3.3 in the paraclinical sciences including zoonoses, biosecurity, and the epidemiology of diseases with a focus on the microorganisms and parasites that can infect animals.
  4. Demonstrate safe and competent handling and restraint of common small and large animal domestic species and wildlife for basic procedures and clinical examination.
  5. Describe optimal health, welfare, productivity, and sustainability of individual animals and in populations of animals.

Conditions

Condition of Admission
Q Fever Vaccinations: Students in the Bachelor of Science (Veterinary Bioscience) are required to be vaccinated against Q Fever (unless initial skin test indicates pre-existing immunity).
Inherent requirements: Students are required to acknowledge their understanding of the University of Adelaide veterinary programs inherent requirements (see http://www.sciences.adelaide.edu.au/current-students/forms/inherent-requirements-bscvetbio-dvm).

Condition of Continuing Enrolment
Minimum GPA: A student must maintain a minimum term GPA of 4.00 or greater.

Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Executive Dean or delegate before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.

Program Maximum Duration: As specified in Table 1 of the Coursework Academic Programs Policy, this program must be completed within a Maximum Duration which includes any periods of non-enrolment, leave of absence or approved study at other institutions for credit towards a Program.

Qualification Requirements

To qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Science (Veterinary Bioscience), the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 72 units, comprising:

  1. Core courses to the value of 72 units
  2. Work based learning / extra mural studies
