Overview

Materials Engineering is an interdisciplinary field driving the development of advanced platform materials for emerging technologies such as solar cells, batteries, quantum communications and sensing, green hydrogen energy, and environmental remediation and recycling processes. The objective of materials engineers is to enhance the properties of existing materials (e.g., to make then stronger, lighter, functional, sustainable, cost-competitive) and develop novel materials by designing and engineering their structure and composition at the nanoscale, harnessing cutting-edge fabrication technologies. Materials engineers combine a broad range of knowledge across chemical engineering, physics, mathematics, and chemistry to generate ground-breaking advances that are driving a thriving job market worldwide.

The Master of Materials Engineering will equip students with high-level knowledge and practical research skills in emerging materials engineering disciplines.

The Graduate Certificate in Materials Engineering is an AQF Level 8 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 0.5 years.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the background and state-of-the-art practice of Materials Engineering, especially in the area of energy materials. Be aware of the contemporary issues in the relevant areas.
  2. Develop fudamental skills and techniques for materials engineering; able to model, synthese, characterize, and test materials.
  3. Develop the ability to apply core concepts in Materials Engineering to engage in professional practice, and the ability to conduct data analysis.
  4. Be able to communicate with others within a technological framework.

Conditions

Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Faculty before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.

Program Maximum Duration: As specified in Table 1 of the Coursework Academic Programs Policy, this program must be completed within a Maximum Duration which includes any periods of non-enrolment, leave of absence or approved study at other institutions for credit towards a Program.
