Overview
This program explores the full spectrum of the biotechnology sector, spanning the discovery, research and development phases. Students will be exposed to a range of technology platforms, and develop highly competitive laboratory, research and project management skills. In addition, students will examine many of the contemporary issues related to biotechnology, including compliance and regulation, commercialisation and risk management strategies.
Biomedical research and its applications are a key focus of the curriculum, particularly as they relate to career opportunities in the Asia Pacific region.
The Graduate Diploma in Biotechnology (Biomedical) is an AQF Level 8 program with a standard full-time duration of 1 year.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Have knowledge and understanding of the content, technologies and practices of biotechnology and how they are translated to applications with a focus on biomedical science.
- Be able to locate, analyse, evaluate and synthesise biomedical, business and industry and social information from a wide variety of sources in a planned, structured and timely manner.
- Be able to communicate scientific and biotechnological knowledge across a wide range of cultural contexts, and to effectively communicate within working groups.
- Be able to communicate the importance of continuous improvement and learning, and the application of multi-disciplinary approaches in biotechnology.
- Be able to discuss the importance of the ethical, social and cultural issues and their importance in the exercise of professional skills and responsibilities in biotechnologies in particular.
- Be able to communicate an understanding of how biomedical research can result in beneficial outcomes.
Conditions
Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Executive Dean or delegate before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.
Program Maximum Duration: As specified in Table 1 of the Coursework Academic Programs Policy, this program must be completed within a Maximum Duration which includes any periods of non-enrolment, leave of absence or approved study at other institutions for credit towards a Program.
Academic Program Rules for Graduate Diploma in Biotechnology (Biomedical)
There shall be a Graduate Diploma in Biotechnology (Biomedical).
Qualification Requirements
To qualify for the Graduate Diploma in Biotechnology (Biomedical), the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 24 units, comprising:
- Core courses to the value of 12 units
- Elective courses to the value of 12 units
