Overview

The Graduate Diploma in Psychology (Advanced) is a flexible and fully online alternative to a fourth year (Honours level) in psychology. It is designed for applicants who have already completed an APAC accredited (Level 1) 3-year undergraduate psychology degree at AQF Level 7, or an APAC accredited (Level 1) graduate diploma in psychology at AQF Level 8.

Commensurate with APAC accreditation (Level 2) requirements, courses focus on pre-professional competencies in psychology practice, including but not limited to; interpersonal communication, interviewing and assessment, intervention and strategy design, as well as research skills. The program concludes with a demonstration of these skills via an individual research project capstone.

The Graduate Diploma in Psychology (Advanced) is an AQF Level 8 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 1 year. However, this program is only offered part-time for a duration of 1.3 years.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate ethically appropriate and competent interpersonal and intercultural communication and interview skills in situations appropriate to psychological practice and research.
  2. Demonstrate basic assessment strategies in situations appropriate to psychological practice and knowledge of psychometric theory and principles of the construction, cultural considerations, implementation and interpretation of some of the more widely used standardised psychological test instruments.
  3. Explain how basic psychological intervention strategies can be applied across a range of contexts.
  4. Design and justify a research agenda in a topic relevant to the discipline of psychology.
  5. Develop and execute an effective data analysis plan that is transparent, reproducible, and based on ethical best practice.
  6. Synthesise and communicate findings related to a substantive individual research question relevant to the discipline of psychology, for a variety of audiences.

Conditions

Condition of Enrolment

Interruption of program: Research Project A and Research Project B courses must be taken in consecutive Online Teaching Periods. Leave of absence requests are not permitted under ordinary circumstances once a student has commenced or completed Research Project A.

Program Maximum Duration: As specified in Table 1 of the Coursework Academic Programs Policy, this program must be completed within a Maximum Duration which includes any periods of non-enrolment, leave of absence or approved study at other institutions for credit towards a Program.

Qualification Requirements

To qualify for the Graduate Diploma in Psychology (Advanced), the student must satisfactorily complete a program of study consisting of the 24 units, comprising:

  1. Core courses to the value of 18 units:
  • Carousel 1 (9 units)
  • Carousel 2 (9 units)
  1. Research project courses to the value of 6 units
  • Carousel 3 (6 units)
