Overview
This program supports two areas of specialisation - one focused on submarines and one focused on surface ships. The objective of this program is to fill an educational gap for marine defence and civil industry engineers, by providing the means for them to obtain a relevant higher degree qualification, thus providing an incentive for attracting new staff and retaining experienced personnel. The broader aim of the Masters program is to address the shortage of relevant higher education in the defence and civil marine engineering sector by providing the only Master degree in Maritime Engineering or equivalent in Australia. This program also accepts enrolments from international applicants. The 18 month Master by coursework program allows students to put into practice some of the fundamentals learnt in earlier years. At the same time, elective courses allow students to go more deeply into topics for which they already have the fundamentals, while others allow for a broadening of the student experience.
The Master of Maritime Engineering is an AQF Level 9 Masters Extension qualification with a standard full-time duration of 1.5 years.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the natural and physical sciences, and mathematical and computer sciences, which underpin the maritime engineering domain.
- Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the systems, technologies and design philosophies used and investigated worldwide in the maritime engineering domain for ships and submarines.
- Exercise professional judgement, founded on a systems engineering approach applicable to each of the life cycle phases of maritime assets, ships and submarines and naval infrastructures.
- Contribute proactively to the work of engineering teams, both as a team member and a team leader, and maintain respectful, constructive and diverse team environments to enable the seaworthiness demonstration of maritime assets with the successful integration of systems from a naval architecture perspective.
- Plan and manage resources using systematic methodologies to create solutions to complex engineering problems.
- Think critically and independently, apply logic and exercise judgement in a selected domain of expertise relevant to maritime engineering, such as naval architect, ship/boat systems or transverse specialist to create fit for purpose, safe to operate and sustainable outcomes.
- Apply in-depth knowledge of the principles and methods of research in the nominated field of specialisation to devise innovative engineering solutions.
- Employ highly-developed oral and written communication skills to communicate complex information and present persuasive arguments.
Conditions
Condition of Admission
Work experience: Applicants without an Honours degree in Engineering or a Graduate Diploma in Marine Engineering must provide evidence of formal qualifications and professional work experience providing equivalent learning outcomes. As a guideline, a minimum of 2 years of full-time relevant professional work experience will be required.
Condition of Enrolment
Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Executive Dean or delegate before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.
Program Maximum Duration: As specified in Table 1 of the Coursework Academic Programs Policy, this program must be completed within a Maximum Duration which includes any periods of non-enrolment, leave of absence or approved study at other institutions for credit towards a Program.
Academic Program Rules for Master of Maritime Engineering
There shall be a Master of Maritime Engineering.
Qualification Requirements
To qualify for the degree of Master of Maritime Engineering, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 36 units comprising:
- Core courses to the value of 9 units
- Research Project to the value of 12 units
- Elective courses to the value of 15 units
