Overview

Materials Engineering is an interdisciplinary field driving the development of advanced platform materials for emerging technologies such as solar cells, batteries, quantum communications and sensing, green hydrogen energy, and environmental remediation and recycling processes. The objective of materials engineers is to enhance the properties of existing  materials (e.g., to make then stronger, lighter, functional, sustainable, cost-competitive) and develop novel materials by designing and engineering their structure and composition at the nanoscale, harnessing cutting-edge fabrication technologies. Materials engineers combine a broad range of knowledge across chemical engineering, physics, mathematics, and chemistry to generate ground-breaking advances that are driving a thriving job market worldwide.

The Master of Materials Engineering will equip students with high-level knowledge and practical research skills in emerging materials engineering disciplines.

The Master of Materials Engineering is an AQF Level 9 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 2 years.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate specialised knowledge at advanced level of the background, market demand, and state-of-the-art practice of Materials Engineering, especially in the area of energy materials, quantum materials, and optical materials. Be aware of the contemporary issues in the relevant areas.
  2. Develop skills and techniques necessary for modern materials engineering practice, able to design materials and conduct experiments, including synthesis, characterization, and testing of advanced materials.
  3. Develop the ability to apply core concepts in Materials Engineering to engage in scientific research or professional practice, and the ability to handle complex engineering and technical issues using critical thinking and data analysis. Understand the importance of life-long learning.
  4. Be able to communicate effectively with a range of audiences while speaking, employing graphics and writing. Be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
  5. Be aware of the social, safety and environmental consequences of the work as a materials engineer. Develop capability to construct and produce professional advice relating to the technical practice and project management of Materials Engineering.

Conditions

Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Faculty before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.

Program Maximum Duration: As specified in Table 1 of the Coursework Academic Programs Policy, this program must be completed within a Maximum Duration which includes any periods of non-enrolment, leave of absence or approved study at other institutions for credit towards a Program.
