Overview
The program offers students an opportunity to explore the interrelations between nations and peoples, and to examine global politics, problems, and actors from a variety of perspectives. As well as core topics in international security, global justice and foreign policy, students have the opportunity to complete a minor in Asian Studies, History, International Development, International Business, Geography, or a language. The program also includes a variety of approaches to citizenship and human rights, with a particular focus in the area of global citizenship. Students complete core courses in international politics and a wide range of closed electives, as well as a minor in a relevant area. The program incorporates a range of international experiences, including study tours and an international studies internship.
The Bachelor of International Relations is an AQF Level 7 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 3 years.
Conditions
Condition of enrolment
Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Program Coordinator before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.
Academic Program Rules for Bachelor of International Relations
There shall be a Bachelor of International Relations.
Qualification Requirements
To qualify for the degree of Bachelor of International Relations, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 72 units, comprising:
- Core courses to the value of 18 units
- Closed Electives to the value of 18 units
- At least one minor to the value of 18 units, with no more than 6 units at Level I, at least 6 units at Level II and 6 units at Level III:
- Asian Studies
- Geography, Environment and Population
- History
- International Business
- International Development
- Language studies courses to the value of at least 9 units, with not more than 6 units at Level I and at least 3 units at Level II, chosen from the following language studies disciplines:
- Chinese Studies
- French Studies
- German Studies
- Indonesian Studies
- Italian Studies
- Japanese Studies
- Spanish Studies
- Open electives to the value of 9 units or an additional 9 units of language studies courses to complete a minor of 18 units in the chosen language.
- Not more than 24 units at Level I
- Level II and III courses to the value of at least 48 units, with at least 18 units at Level III
- Level II courses to the value of 6 units must be completed before commencing Level III courses
Credit in Formal Double Degree Arrangements
Bachelor of Laws
Students who have passed courses in the degree of Bachelor of Laws at the University of Adelaide will be granted credit toward the Bachelor of International Studies.
The requirement to complete a minor in the Bachelor of International Studies Relations is waived.

Bachelor of International Relations with Bachelor of Economics
Bachelor of Media with Bachelor of International Relations
A student who undertakes any of the three double degrees listed above may count a maximum of 24 units towards both degrees with a minimum total of 96 units (or 4 years) of study.
The requirements to complete a minor in the Bachelor of International Relations is waived.
*Exemption
International students and/or students studying a Diploma in Languages or a language major or minor in another degree are exempt from completing the mandatory language component, although may complete language units in a different language if they wish.
