Overview

The Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Sciences provides students with knowledge in both the Humanities and the Sciences. This interdisciplinary program offers students both choice and flexibility in shaping their own course of study.  The program is ideal for students who wish to explore a wide variety of subject areas and for those who wish to follow a specific interest in a particular area of arts or sciences or both. Students have the opportunity to tailor this program to their academic interests. The program is taught by academic staff from both the Faculty of Sciences and the Faculty of the Arts.

The Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Sciences is an AQF Level 7 qualification with a standard full-time duration
of 3 years.

Conditions

Condition of enrolment
Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Program Coordinator before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.

Academic Program Rules for Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Sciences

There shall be a Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Qualification Requirements

To qualify for the Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Sciences the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following courses with a combined total of not less than 72 units, comprising:
1. Level I courses not exceeding 30 units.
2. Level III courses to the value of 24 units
3. Core courses to the value of 33 units including ARTS 1007 The Enquiring Mind or ARTS 1007OL The Enquiring Mind
4. Electives to the value of 39 units, which must include:
At least 18 units from the Faculty of Arts and,
At least 18 units from the Faculty of Sciences
At least 3 units of Open electives
Or
5. If Studying a Arts major of 24 units in one of the following:
Anthropology
Art History and Visual Culture
Asian Studies
Chinese Studies
Classics
Creative Writing
Criminology
English
French Studies
Gender Studies
Geography Environment and Population
German Studies
History
Indigenous Knowledges and Society*
Indonesian Studies
International Development
Italian Studies
Japanese Studies
Linguistics
Modern Greek Studies
Music
Philosophy
Politics and International Relations
Sociology
Spanish Studies
Science Elective courses to the value of 12 units and Open electives to the value of 3 units in lieu of the courses required in (4)
Or
6. If Studying a Arts major in Psychology of 33 units, Science Elective courses to the value of 3 units and Open electives to the value of 3 units in lieu of the courses required in (4).
Or
7. If Studying a Arts minor of 18 units in one of the following:
Anthropology
Art History and Visual Culture
Asian Studies
Chinese Studies
Classics
Creative Writing
Criminology
English
French Studies
Gender Studies
Geography Environment and Population
German Studies
History
History of Philosophy of Science
Indigenous Knowledges and Society*

8. If Studying a Arts minor in Psychology of 21 units, Science Elective courses to the value of 15 units and Open electives to the value of 3 units in lieu of the courses required in (4)
Or
9. If studying a Science Major of 24 units in one of the following:
Chemistry
Evolutionary Biology
Geology
Genetics
Microbiology and Immunology
Soil Science
Arts Electives to the value 12 units and Open electives to the value of 3 units in lieu of the courses required in (4)
 
* In the case of a major or minor in Indigenous Knowledges and Society students will be required to undertake an additional course to the value of 3 units in lieu of ABORIG 1002 Indigenous Scholarship & Interplay of Knowledges.

  • Open Electives

    To satisfy the requirements for Open Electives students must complete courses to the value of 39 units.

    Bachelor of Arts Elective Courses

    Open Elective courses to the value of at least 18 units, taken from the majors, minors and electives available in the Bachelor of Arts

    Bachelor of Science Elective Courses

    Open Elective courses to the value of at least 18 units, taken from the majors, double majors and Science Electives available in the Bachelor of Science

    Open Elective

    Courses to the value of 3 units from any undergraduate courses offered by the University that are available to the student.
