Overview
The Master of Petroleum Engineering Science is designed for graduates with a Bachelor Honours degree in petroleum engineering or a Bachelor degree in petroleum engineering. The program is suited to students who wish to obtain knowledge, understanding and strong analytical skills in petroleum engineering at an advanced level.
It is also aimed at petro-technical professionals already working in the upstream petroleum industry (with a Bachelor/Honours degree in petroleum engineering) who wish to advance their technical careers in petroleum engineering. Individuals who have significant upstream petroleum industry experience may also be eligible for, and benefit from, this program.
The Master of Petroleum Engineering Science is an AQF Level 9 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 1 year (extension program) for those who enter into the program with a Bachelor Honours degree in petroleum engineering.
The Master of Petroleum Engineering Science is an AQF Level 9 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 1.5-2 years (extension program) for those who enter into the program with a Bachelor degree in petroleum engineering. Depending on students’ background knowledge and work experiences, the full time duration can vary from 1.5-2 years.
The Master of Petroleum Engineering Science is an AQF Level 9 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 2 years (conversion program) for those who enter into the program with a Bachelor Honours degree in an engineering discipline other than petroleum engineering.
Conditions
Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Faculty before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.
Academic Program Rules for Master of Petroleum Engineering Science
There shall be a Master of Petroleum Engineering Science.
Qualification Requirements
The number of core and elective courses for the Master of Petroleum Engineering Science based on the three different entry modes is summarised below:
- Through conversion program
- Core courses - 36 * units + 6 units (Research project A or B)
- Electives - 6 units(advanced courses)
- Total units - 48
- Bachelor honours degree in petroleum engineering
- Core courses - 12 units of advanced courses + 12 units of research (Research project A or B)
- Total units - 24
- Bachelor degree in petroleum engineering
- 24 units of courses including advanced
courses + 12 units of research (Research project A and B) - Electives - Up to 12 units**
- Total units - 36-48
- 24 units of courses including advanced
**Note that these 12 units are for those students who may require to build further skill and knowledge. This depends on their background knowledge and will be assessed by the program coordinator at the time of admission.
1. To qualify for the degree of Master of Petroleum Engineering Science, as a conversion program, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following courses with a combined total of not less than 48 units, comprising:
Core courses to the value of 36 units (Note: these are the courses offered in the Master of Petroleum Engineering program (Conversion master))
Additional 12 units include a research project to the value of 6 units and 6 units of advanced courses
2. To qualify for the degree of Master of Petroleum Engineering and Science, as an extension program, the student (with a
Bachelor Honours degree in Petroleum Engineering) must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following courses with a combined total of not less than 24 units, comprising:
Core courses to the value of 12 units
A research project to the value of 12 units
3. To qualify for the degree of Master of Petroleum Engineering and Science, as an extension program, the student (with a Bachelor degree in petroleum engineering) must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following courses with a combined total of not less than 36 units, comprising:
Core courses to the value of 24 units
A research project to the value of 12 units
