Overview

The Bachelor of Sociology offers a range of courses which will combine deep discipline knowledge of sociology with advanced quantitative data analysis skills. Key to the program is the acquisition of sociological knowledge and techniques, including quantitative data analysis.

The Bachelor of Sociology is an AQF Level 7 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 3 years.

Conditions

Condition of enrolment
Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Program Coordinator before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.

Academic Program Rules for Bachelor of Sociology

There shall be a Bachelor of Sociology.

Qualification Requirements

To qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Sociology, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 72 units:

  1. Core courses to the value of 30 units, including ARTS 1007 The Enquiring Mind or ARTS1007OL The Enquiring Mind
  2. Sociology Closed Electives to the value of 3 units
  3. Elective courses to the value of up to 39 units
  4. Broadening Electives to the value of up to 9 units excluding courses from the following subject areas: SOCI; OR
  5. If studying a Major in Criminology, Open Elective courses to the value of 12 units in lieu of the courses required in (3) and (4); OR
  6. If studying a Major in Gender Studies, Open Elective courses to the value of 12 units in lieu of the courses required in (3) and (4); OR
  7. If studying a Major in International Development, Open Elective courses to the value of 12 units in lieu of the courses required in (3) and (4); OR
  8. If studying a Major in Politics, Open Elective courses to the value of 12 units in lieu of the courses required in (3) and (4); OR
  9. If studying a Minor in International Development, Open Elective courses to the value of 18 units in lieu of the courses required in (3) and (4); OR
  10. If studying a Minor in Management, Open Elective courses to the value of 18 units in lieu of the courses required in (3) and (4); OR
  11. If studying a Minor in Politics, Open Elective courses to the value of 18 units in lieu of the courses required in (3) and (4); OR
  12. If studying a Minor in Public Health, Open Elective courses to the value of 18 units in lieu of the courses required in (3) and (4); OR
  13. If studying a Minor in Psychology, Open Elective courses to the value of 15 units in lieu of the courses required in (3) and (4); OR
  14. If studying a Minor in Criminology, Open Elective courses to the value of 18 units in lieu of the courses required in (3) and (4); OR
  15. If studying a Minor in Gender Studies, Open Elective courses to the value of 18 units in lieu of the courses required in (3) and (4).

    To satisfy the requirements for Open/Broadening Elective Courses students must complete courses to the value of 39 units.

    Open Elective

    Open Elective courses up to the value of 30 units from any undergraduate courses offered by the University that are available to the student.

    Broadening Elective

    Broadening Electives up to the value of 9 units, can be chosen from any discipline other than courses with the subject areas: SOCI.

    You have the option to undertake a major in Criminology, Gender Studies, International Relations, Management or Politics, in lieu of elective courses to the value of 24 units.
    OR
    You have the option to undertake a minor in Criminology, Gender Studies, International Relations, Management, Politics or Public Health in lieu of elective courses to the value of 18 units.
    OR
    You have the option to undertake a minor in Psychology in lieu of elective courses to the value of 21 units.

    Broadening is not required when undertaking a major or minor.
