Overview
The Masters degree in Marine Engineering supports two areas of specialisation - one focused on submarines and one focused on surface ships. The objective of this program is to fill an educational gap for marine defence and civil industry engineers, by providing the means for them to obtain a relevant higher degree qualification, thus providing an incentive for attracting new staff and retaining experienced personnel. The broader aim of the Masters program is to address the shortage of relevant higher education in the defence and civil marine engineering sector by providing the only Master degree in Marine Engineering or equivalent in Australia. This program also accepts enrolments from international applicants. The 18 month Master by coursework program allows students to put into practice some of the fundamentals learnt in earlier years. At the same time, elective courses allow students to go more deeply into topics for which they already have the fundamentals, while others allow for a broadening of the student experience.
The Master of Marine Engineering is an AQF Level 9 Masters Extension qualification with a standard full-time duration of 1.5 years.
Conditions
Condition of Admission
1. Work experience: Applicants without an Honours degree in Engineering or a Graduate Diploma in Marine Engineering must provide evidence of formal qualifications and professional work experience providing equivalent learning outcomes. As a guideline, a minimum of 2 years of full-time relevant professional work experience will be required.
Condition of Enrolment
2. Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Executive Dean or delegate before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.

Qualification Requirements
To qualify for the degree of Master of Marine Engineering, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 36 units comprising:
- Core courses to the value of 9 units
- Elective courses to the value of 15 units
- Research Project to the value of 12 units.
