Overview

This program focuses on the biomedical aspects of biology, including the normal and abnormal function of the human body. The emphasis is on modern biomedical knowledge and the research approaches used to gain that knowledge. Students will start from a broad base in their first year that includes biology and chemistry and will begin to specialise in their second year with a focus on biochemistry, genetics and microbiology and immunology. In their third year, students will choose a major in one of biochemistry, genetics or microbiology and immunology. The third year has a substantial research focus.
The Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Science) is an AQF Level 7 program with a standard full-time duration of 3 years.

Academic Program Rules for Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Science) (BSc(BiomedSc))

There shall be a Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Science) (BSc(BiomedSc)).

Qualification Requirements
Academic Program

To qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Science), the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 72 units:

  1. Core courses to the value of 18 units
  2. Elective courses to the value of 54 units, which may include other undergraduate courses offered by the University that are available to the student up to the value of 9 units in total at levels I and/or II with no more than 6 units at Level I.
  3. Level I courses not exceeding 30 units
  4. Level III Science courses to the value of at least 24 units
  5. A major chosen from the following:
    • Biochemistry
    • Genetics
    • Microbiology & Immunology

Level I

BIOLOGY 1101 Biology I: Molecules, Genes and Cells (3 units)

BIOLOGY 1201 Biology I: Human Perspectives (3 units)

and

Courses to the value of 6 units from the following:

CHEM 1100 Chemistry IA (3 units)

CHEM 1101 Foundations of Chemistry IA (3 units)

CHEM 1200 Chemistry IB (3 units)

CHEM 1201 Foundations of Chemistry IB (3 units)

CHEM 1310 Chemistry IA(S) (3 units)

CHEM 1311 Chemistry IB(S) (3 units)

Level II

All of the following courses must be completed:

BIOMED 2510 Biomedical Science IIA (3 units)

BIOMED 2520 Biomedical Science IIB (3 units)

Biochemistry major

Level III

All of the following courses must be completed:

BIOCHEM 3230 Molecular & Structural Biology III (Biomed Sci) (6 units)

BIOCHEM 3235 Cancer, Stem Cells & Development III (Biomed Sc) (6 units)

Genetics major

Level III

All of the following courses must be completed:

GENETICS 3111 Genes, Genomes and Molecular Evolution III (6 units)

GENETICS 3212 Gene Expression & Hum Devel Genetics (Biomed) III (6 units)

Microbiology & Immunology major

Level III

All of the following courses must be completed:

MICRO 3102 Infection & Immunity IIIA (Biomedical Science) (6 units)

MICRO 3202 Infection and Immunity IIIB (Biomedical Science) (6 units)

Elective Courses

Level I

Elective courses from the Bachelor of Science (which may include BIOLOGY 1202 Biology I: Organisms) or other undergraduate courses offered by the University that are available to the student.

 

Level II

Courses to the value of at least 12 units from the following:

BIOCHEM 2500 Biochemistry II: Molecular and Cell Biology (3 units)

BIOCHEM 2501 Biochemistry II: Metabolism (3 units)

GENETICS 2510 Genetics IIA: Foundation of Genetics (3 units)

GENETICS 2520 Genetics IIB: Function and Diversity of Genomes (3 units)

MICRO 2500 Microbiology II (3 units)

MICRO 2501 Immunology & Virology II (3 units)

and

Additional Level II courses from the Bachelor of Science or other undergraduate courses offered by the University that are available to the student. 

 

Level III


 

Additional Level III courses (which may include a major)  in the disciplines of Biochemistry, Chemistry, Genetics, Microbiology & Immunology, from the Bachelor of Science.
