Overview

The Bachelor of Languages is designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop proficiency in one or more languages as well as an enhanced knowledge of the culture(s) in which the language they are studying is spoken, with the option of supplementing the proficiency in one language and the knowledge of its culture with an enhanced knowledge of linguistics. Students who complete the program will thus develop a heightened awareness of language as a system and of its role in society, as well as a greater appreciation of cultural diversity and of cultural difference.

The Bachelor of Languages is an AQF Level 7 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 3 years.

Conditions

Condition of enrolment
Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Executive Dean or delegate before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.

There shall be a Bachelor of Languages (BLang).

Qualification Requirements
Academic Program

To qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Languages, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 72 units, comprising:
1.   Not more than 24 units at Level I
2.   A course chosen from the Core Competency List to the value of 3 units
3.   Two majors to the value of 24 units each (48 in total) from the following:

  • Beginners' Chinese Studies
  • Continuers' Chinese Studies
  • Chinese Studies Background Speakers
  • Beginners' French Studies
  • Continuers' French Studies
  • Beginners' German Studies
  • Continuers' German Studies
  • Continuers' Advanced German Studies
  • Beginners' Indonesian Studies
  • Advanced Indonesian Studies
  • Beginners' Italian Studies

Linguistics Major

To satisfy the requirements for Linguistics Major students must complete courses to the value of 24 units.

A minimum of 3 units and a maximum of 6 units must be completed at Level I, a minimum of 3 units of Level II and at least 12 units at Level III, including 6 units of the designated capstone course. Students must complete at least 3 units in the major of Level I before undertaking courses at Level II, 3 units at Level II before undertaking courses at Level III, and 15 units in the major before undertaking the capstone. Courses up to the value of 6 units may be presented from the cross-listed courses.
