The Bachelor of Languages (Honours) is a one year program that includes advanced coursework and a research project in which students produce an extended piece of work (thesis) on a topic chosen in consultation with an academic supervisor.

The Bachelor of Languages (Honours) is an AQF Level 8 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 1 year.

Condition of enrolment
Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Executive Dean or delegate before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.

Academic Program Rules for Bachelor of Languages (Honours) (BLang(Hons))

There shall be a Bachelor of Languages (Honours) (BLang(Hons)).

To qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Languages (Honours), the student must complete an area of research (major) with a combined total of not less than 24 units, from the following:

• Chinese Studies
• French Studies
• German Studies
• Japanese Studies
• Linguistics
• Spanish Studies

Combined Honours

Combined Honours in two languages, comprising 6 units of core courses from each language and a 12 unit thesis, may also be undertaken with the approval of both language departments.

Chinese Studies Honours

To satisfy the requirements for Chinese Studies Honours students must complete courses to the value of 24 units.

Core Courses

All of the following courses must be completed:

ASIA 4001 Honours Asian Studies Special Topics (6 units)

ASIA 4002 Honours Asian Studies Theory and Methodology (6 units)

Research Dissertation

Courses to the value of 12 units from the following:

In the case of full-time enrolment students must take the following:

ASIA 4003 Honours Asian Studies Thesis (12 units)

or

Courses to the value of 12 units from the following:

In the case of part-time enrolment the following two courses must be completed in consecutive semesters. Students are required to take both Part A and the matching Part B course:

ASIA 4004A Honours Asian Studies Thesis A (0 units)

ASIA 4004B Honours Asian Studies Thesis B (12 units)

French Studies Honours

To satisfy the requirements for French Studies Honours students must complete courses to the value of 24 units.

Core Courses

All of the following courses must be completed:

FREN 4001 Honours French Culture A (3 units)

FREN 4002 Honours French Culture B (3 units)

FREN 4003 Honours French Language A (3 units)

FREN 4004 Honours French Language B (3 units)

Research Dissertation

Courses to the value of 12 units from the following:

In the case of full-time or part-time enrolment the following two courses must be completed in consecutive semesters. Students are required to take both Part 1 and Part 2:

German Studies Honours

To satisfy the requirements for German Studies Honours students must complete courses to the value of 24 units.
