Overview

The Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice is an accredited practical legal training (PLT) program. PLT is a compulsory requirement to be admitted as a barrister and solicitor in South Australia. Completion of the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice together with the Bachelor of Laws, allows for direct admission to practice in South Australia, and enables admission in other Australian states under mutual recognition rules.
The Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice is an AQF Level 8 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 1 year.

Conditions

Condition of Enrolment

Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Faculty before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.

Academic Program Rules for Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice (GDipLegalPrac)

There shall be a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice (GDipLegalPrac).

Qualification Requirements
Academic Program

To qualify for the degree of Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 24 units and graduated with the Bachelor of Laws or equivalent, comprising:

  1. Core courses to the value of 18 units
  2. Elective courses to the value of 6 units

Core Courses

To satisfy the requirements for Core Courses students must complete courses to the value of 18 units.

All of the following courses must be completed:

LAW 6502 Civil Litigation Practice (3 units)

LAW 6503 Commercial and Corporate Practice (3 units)

LAW 6504 Property Law Practice (3 units)

LAW 6505 Professional Obligations (3 units)

LAW 6601 Lawyer's Skills (3 units)

Courses to the value of up to 3 units may be taken from the following:

LAW 6515 Work Experience Placement (3 units)

LAW 6516OL Work Experience Placement Online (3 units)

Elective Courses

To satisfy the requirements for Elective Courses students must complete courses to the value of 6 units.

Courses to the value of 6 units from the following:

LAW 6506 Criminal Law Practice (3 units)

LAW 6507 Family Law Practice (3 units)

LAW 6508 Employment and Industrial Relations Practice (3 units)

LAW 6509 Planning and Environmental Law Practice (3 units)

LAW 6510 Wills and Estates Practice (3 units)

LAW 6511 Administrative Law Practice (3 units)

LAW 6512 Banking and Finance (3 units)

LAW 6514 Consumer Law Practice (3 units)
