Overview

The Graduate Diploma of Public Policy is designed for those who work in, or aspire to have a career in, policy, whether it is in government, intergovernmental organisations, industry or not for-profit sector.

The program adopts a multidisciplinary approach in the development of the student’s knowledge and skills in public policy. It brings together current public policy theory and debates with practical policy analysis and research skill development relevant for the 21st Century. The Graduate Diploma of Public Policy also provide students with the opportunity to select electives in policy domains for their interest.

The Graduate Diploma of Public Policy is an AQF Level 8 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 1 year.

Conditions

Interruption of program:
Students must apply for permission from the Executive Dean or delegate before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.

Academic Program Rules for Graduate Diploma of Public Policy (GDipPubPolicy)

There shall be a Graduate Diploma of Public Policy (GDipPubPolicy).

Qualification Requirements
Academic Program

To qualify for the degree of Graduate Diploma of Public Policy, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following courses with a combined total of not less than 24 units, comprising:
1. Core courses to a maximum of 15 units
2. Electives to the value of 9 units

Core Courses

To satisfy the requirements for Core Courses students must complete courses to the value of 15 units.

Core Courses

Courses to the value of up to 15 units may be taken from the following:

  1. Students who have an undergraduate degree in a cognate discipline to economics may substitute a 3 unit ECON Level 7 elective for ECON 7200. Program Coordinator approval is required.
  2. Students with an LLB degree may substitute another law course at Masters Level or elective course listed on page 1 in place of the required one.
  3. Students who wish to enrol in LAW 7192 Government, Law and Policy without having completed LAW 7177, or any form of equivalent introduction to law, may apply for that prerequisite to be waived. A waiver will be granted to anyone who can show previous experience with Australia’s system of law and government, or a system like it elsewhere, including through work in the government sector. Students granted such a waiver will be given access to additional study materials on the Australian legal system.
