Overview

The Bachelor of Sociology offers a range of courses which will combine deep discipline knowledge of sociology with advanced quantitative data analysis skills. Key to the program is the acquisition of sociological knowledge and techniques, including quantitative data analysis.
The Bachelor of Sociology is an AQF Level 7 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 3 years.
 

Conditions

Condition of enrolment
Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Program Coordinator before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.

Academic Program Rules for Bachelor of Sociology

There shall be a Bachelor of Sociology.

Qualification Requirements

To qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Sociology, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 72 units:

  1. Core courses to the value of 27 units, including ARTS 1007 The Enquiring Mind
  2. Sociology Closed Electives to the value of 9 units
  3. Elective courses to the value of up to 27 units
  4. Broadening Electives to the value of up to 9 units

    To satisfy the requirements for Sociology Closed Electives students must complete courses to the value of 9 units.

    To satisfy the requirements for Electives students must complete courses to the value of 27 units.

    Courses to the value of up to 27 units may be taken from the following:

    Any of the elective lists within the Bachelor of Arts program.

    or

    Courses to the value of up to 18 units may be taken from the following:

    If studying a Major in International Development, Management or Politics, courses to the value of 12 units from any of the elective lists within the Bachelor of Arts program.
    Or
    If studying a Minor in International Development, Management or Politics, courses to the value of 18 units from any of the elective lists within the Bachelor of Arts program.
    Or
    If studying a Minor in Psychology, courses to the value of 15 units from any of the elective lists within the Bachelor of Arts program.

  • Broadening Electives

    To satisfy the requirements for Broadening Electives students must complete courses to the value of 9 units.

    Courses to the value of 9 units from the following:

    Courses to the value of 9 units chosen from outside of the major area of study and cannot be chosen from the following subject areas or from the minor: CRIM, GEND and SOCI. This requirement is waived if studying any Major or Minor available in the program.
