Overview

The Bachelor of Languages is designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop proficiency in one or more languages as well as an enhanced knowledge of the culture(s) in which the language they are studying is spoken. Students who complete the program will thus develop a heightened awareness of language as a system and of its role in society, as well as a greater appreciation of cultural diversity and of cultural difference. The program is open to anyone who has successfully studied a language at Year 12 (or equivalent).

The Bachelor of Languages is an AQF Level 7 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 3 years.

Conditions

Condition of enrolment
Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Program Coordinator before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.

Academic Program Rules for Bachelor of Languages

There shall be a Bachelor of Languages .

Qualification Requirements
Academic Program: 

To qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Languages, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 72 units, comprising:
1.   Not more than 24 units at Level I.
2.   Core courses to the value of 3 units.
3.   One major to the value of 24 units from the following:

  • Beginners' Chinese Studies
  • Continuers' Chinese Studies
  • Chinese Studies Background Speakers
  • Beginners' French Studies
  • Continuers' French Studies
  • Beginners' German Studies
  • Continuers' German Studies
  • Continuers' Advanced German Studies
  • Beginners' Indonesian Studies
  • Advanced Indonesian Studies
  • Beginners' Italian Studies
  • Advanced Italian Studies
  • Beginners' Japanese Studies
  • Continuers' Japanese Studies
  • Beginners' Modern Greek Studies
  • Advanced Modern Greek Studies
  • Beginners' Spanish Studies
  • Continuers' Spanish Studies

4.   Cognate courses to the value of 6 units complementary to the
      major.
5.   At least one minor to the value of 18 units in a different
      language to the major or in Linguistics.
6.   Open Electives to the value of 21 units from the degree of
      Bachelor of Arts or other courses offered by the University
      that are available to the student.

Core Courses

To satisfy the requirements for Core Courses students must complete courses to the value of 3 units.
