Overview

This program is designed to provide specialisation in the related fields of health economics and health policy. The program provides the necessary core knowledge in the separate academic disciplines of Public Health, and Economics, which provides the foundations and insights required to developing an inter-disciplinary approach to improving health service efficiency. Graduates will develop the capacity to design health reform programs, analyse policy effectiveness, perform economic evaluations of health care interventions, and identify challenges for policy implementation and governance.
The flexible structure of the program allows students to tailor their studies according to their educational background or career aspirations, including options to focus on econometrics, health care delivery and planning in countries at different stages of development, and Health Technology Assessment (HTA). The University of Adelaide has particular expertise across the varying components of HTA, and students can complete the Master’s program with a specialisation in HTA.
An applicant for admission to the academic program for the Master of Health Economics and Policy shall have either qualified for:

  • an undergraduate degree of the University or a degree of another institution accepted for the purpose as equivalent to a degree of the University, that contains a major in Economics, or
  • a Graduate Certificate in Economics, or
  • a Graduate Diploma in Health Economics

The Master of Health Economics is an AQF Level 9 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 1.5 years.

Conditions

Condition of Enrolment
Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Head of School/Program Coordinator before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.

Condition of Continuing Enrolment
Research dissertation: A student must complete the core courses of the degree with a minimum GPA of 6.0, in order to proceed to the research dissertation.

Academic Program Rules for Master of Health Economics and Policy

There shall be a Master of Health Economics and Policy.

Qualification Requirements
Academic Program: 

To qualify for the degree of Master of Health Economics and Policy, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 36 units, comprising studies in either Health Economics and Policy, or Health Technology Assessment
:

  1. For Health Economics and Policy, students must complete Core courses to the value of 18 units plus Elective courses to the value of 18 units
  2. For Health Technology Assessment, students must complete Core courses to the value of 18 units, Economics Electives to the value of 6 units and Public Health Electives the value of 12 units, including PUB HLTH 7147HO Health Technology Assessment (3 units)
  3. Research equivalent courses to the value of 12 units in the form of a research paper for publication may be counted in lieu of PUB HLTH 7085 Applied Health Economic Evaluation Research Project (6 units) and Elective courses to the value of 6 units.
