Overview

The Bachelor of Teaching (Middle) with Bachelor of Music double degree prepares students for teaching years 7 to 10 of the Australian Curriculum. It is designed for students who are beginning tertiary study. The primary focus in the first three years of the double degree is on completing two teaching areas taught at the middle school level (years 7 to 10 inclusive).
 
Students are required to have completed the requirements of the discipline degree to be eligible to enrol into the fourth year of the program.

The Bachelor of Teaching (Middle) with Bachelor of Music is an AQF Level 7 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 4 years.

The program is offered as a double degree only and students are required to complete both awards at the same time.

Conditions

Condition of Admission
Criminal History Clearance: Students must be able to demonstrate a successful National Criminal History Record Check (NCHRC) as it is required by teacher employment authorities in Australia and South Australia. A Working With Children Check (WWCC) is required prior to undertaking any professional experience/practicum placements which involves contact with minors (under 18 years of age). These placements are compulsory. International students will be required to obtain a certificate from their home country

Condition of Enrolment
Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Program Coordinator before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.

Re-audition to enrol in a Performance course after a break: A student who is eligible in any year to enrol in a performance course and who fails to do so, and who wishes to enrol in one of these courses in a subsequent year, will be required to re-audition and to reach a minimum standard for enrolment in the course in question before being authorised to enrol in that course.
And / Or
A student who takes leave from a performance course for one semester and is unable to show continuity of learning on their instrument may be required to re-audition on their instrument. Approval is required from the Head of Area.

Condition of Continuing Enrolment
LANTITE: progression into the fourth year of the program is subject to the successful completion of both the literacy and numeracy components of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE).

Academic Program Rules for Bachelor of Teaching (Middle) with Bachelor of Music

There shall be a Bachelor of Teaching (Middle) with Bachelor of Music.

Qualification Requirements

To qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Teaching (Middle) with Bachelor of Music, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 96 units, comprising:

1. Core courses to the value of 36 units from the Bachelor of Teaching (Middle)

2. Courses to the value of 12 units to complete a second teaching area, selected from courses listed in the Academic Program Rules for the degree of Bachelor of Arts, excluding any Music courses. The electives must be sequential and comprise no more than two courses at first year level. Second teaching areas can be chosen from:

  • Geography
  • German Studies
  • History
  • Indonesian Studies
  • Instrumental Music
  • Italian Studies
  • Japanese Studies

3. Courses to the value of 6 units from the Bachelor of Teaching Curriculum and Pedagogy courses

4. Courses to the value of 42 units from the Bachelor of Music, including:
  • Level I courses to the value of 18 units
  • Level II courses to the value of 12 units
  • Level III courses to the value of 12 units
