Overview

The Master of Mathematical Sciences allows students with a background in a related field to expand their knowledge in the mathematical sciences to an advanced level. Students may specialise by choosing courses in the disciplines of applied mathematics, pure mathematics and statistics. These courses provide valuable training in academic literacy and research skills, as well as discipline-specific knowledge.

Applied mathematics uses mathematical techniques to answer questions about the world around us; such answers may be in the form of insights, explanations, solutions or predictions. Pure mathematics, mathematics for its own sake, studies abstract theories built by logical deduction that underpin modern science and technology. Statistics solves real-world problems by appropriately collecting, analysing and modelling data.

In the Master of Mathematical Sciences program, students specialise in one of the three disciplines or may choose a broader selection of courses tailored to their particular interests. The program includes a research project.

The Master of Mathematical Sciences is an AQF Level 9 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 2 years.

Conditions

Condition of Enrolment
Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Executive Dean or delegate before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.
 

Academic Program Rules for Master of Mathematical Sciences

There shall be a Master of Mathematical Sciences.

Qualification Requirements
Academic Program: 

To qualify for the degree of Master of Mathematical Sciences, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 48 units, comprising:

  1. Elective courses to the value of 33 units
  2. Research equivalent courses to the value of 15 units in the form of a research project from one of the following disciplines:
    • Applied Mathematics
    • Mathematical Sciences
    • Pure Mathematics
    • Statistics
Master of Mathematical Sciences

To satisfy the requirements for Master of Mathematical Sciences students must complete courses to the value of 48 units.

Electives
