Overview
This program will provide students with the practical skills and knowledge to work as a veterinary technologist and in associated professions that support animal health and welfare. The first two years of the program aim to develop the scientific and technical skills needed to become a veterinary technologist and include a theme of professional development. The final year includes a total of 480 hours of clinical placement to consolidate scientific knowledge and technical skills. Students will have the opportunity to build on their core knowledge and skills by following an area of special interest. This program is based at the Roseworthy Campus.
This program also requires a total of 150 hours of professional work experience to be completed in two 75 hour blocks. The first block needs to be completed before the beginning of Semester 1 of Level II while the second block then needs to be completed by the end of the mid-semester break of Semester 2 of Level II.
The Bachelor of Veterinary Technology is an AQF Level 7 program with a standard full-time duration of 3 years.
Conditions
Condition of Admission:
Q Fever Vaccinations: Students in the Bachelor of Veterinary Technology are required to be vaccinated against Q Fever (unless initial skin test indicates pre-existing immunity).
Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Executive Dean or delegate before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.
Academic Program Rules for Bachelor of Veterinary Technology
There shall be a Bachelor of Veterinary Technology.
Qualification Requirements
To qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Veterinary Technology, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 72 units:
- Core courses to the value of 66 units
- Elective courses to the value of 6 units
- Work based training/Extra Mural Studies

Work Based Training/Extra Mural Studies
To satisfy the requirements for Work Based Training / Extra Mural Studies (EMS) students must adhere to the following:
Students must satisfactorily complete a total of 150 hours (2 x 75 hour blocks) of professional work experience including satisfactorily completing all associated assessment items. Participation in EMS can begin after the successful completion of Level I of the Bachelor of Veterinary Technology program. The first 75 hour block must be completed before the start of semester 1 of Level II of the program. The second 75 hour block of EMS must then be completed by the end of the mid-semester break of Semester 2 of Level II.
Students are also required to complete a total of 480 hours of clinical placements during VET TECH 3010RW Clinical Skills in Veterinary Technology and VET TECH 3025RW Clinical Practice in Veterinary Technology including satisfactorily completing all associated assessment items.
