Overview
This is a double degree program consisting of a Bachelor of Arts with Bachelor of Music. This qualification enables students to pursue a broad range of interests in music and the arts in a self-designed, integrated academic program spanning 5 years. Consult the separate academic program rules for the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Music degrees to obtain full details. Students in the first year of the program focus on music courses, majoring in Classical Performance, Creative Practice, Jazz Performance or Music Education. The remaining four years combine courses from the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music programs.
The Bachelor of Arts with Bachelor of Music double degree is an AQF Level 7 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 5 years.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Demonstrate an developing understanding of and, where appropriate, a technical and musical facility with, the range of skills and contexts that underlie the creation and/or performance of music, and its theoretical and contextual underpinnings.
- Identify and solve problems in performing, analysing, evaluating, and/or generating ideas about music and music literature, by means of research involving primary and secondary source material, and appropriate research methodologies.
- Communicate effectively and present ideas about a range of music and music-making activities in various spoken and written formats.
- Work with others to explore, create and present music, ideas and information, and to collectively negotiate solutions to problems as they arise.
- Demonstrate career readiness and leadership skills appropriate for beginning professional practice, including proficiency in: 5.1 information technology skills to facilitate access, management and storage of relevant material, and to disseminate and communicate effectively with others 5.2 time management and organisational skills, planning and decision making processes, as characterised by independent, robust, and professional leadership.
- Demonstrate an ability to recognise and reflect on social, cultural and ethical issues in music and music-making, and operate with an ethical awareness and professional integrity in a range of social, cultural and linguistic contexts.
- Demonstrate a capacity in self-appraisal and reflective thinking, and demonstrate respect and mutual responsibility in sustaining productive relationships as appropriate to beginning professional practice.
Conditions
Condition of Admission
All applicants must attend and pass an audition / interview and a musicianship test. Applicants may audition for more than one instrument or major.
Condition of Enrolment
Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Executive Dean or Delegate before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.
Re-audition to enrol in performance course after a break: A student who is eligible in any year to enrol in a performance course and who fails to do so, and who wishes to enrol in one of these courses in a subsequent year, will be required to re-audition and to reach a minimum standard for enrolment in the course in question before being authorised to enrol in that course.

A student who takes leave from a performance course for one semester and is unable to show continuity of learning on their instrument may be required to re-audition on their instrument. Approval is required from the Head of Area.
External performances / engagements: The Elder Conservatorium's Head of Undergraduate Programs will determine whether students shall acknowledge the name of the School or its staff in any public performance / engagement in which they participate.
Program Maximum Duration: As specified in Table 1 of the Coursework Academic Programs Policy, this program must be completed within a Maximum Duration which includes any periods of non-enrolment, leave of absence or approved study at other institutions for credit towards a Program.
Academic Program Rules for Bachelor of Arts with Bachelor of Music
There shall be a Bachelor of Arts with Bachelor of Music.
Qualification Requirements
To qualify for the double degree of Bachelor of Arts with Bachelor of Music, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 120 units.
Core Courses

Bachelor of Arts Requirements
To satisfy the requirements for Bachelor of Arts Requirements students must complete courses to the value of 48 units.
To qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Arts students must complete the following:
- Level I courses not exceeding 12 units
- An Arts major to the value of 24 units, or 33 units if doing a major in Psychology or 27 units if doing a major in Mathematical Sciences.
- Elective courses to the value of 24 units, 15 units if doing a major in Psychology, or 21 units if doing a major in Mathematical Sciences, comprising Level II and III elective courses to the value of at least 18 units selected from the Faculty of Arts, Business, Law and Economics (excluding courses offered by the Elder Conservatorium of Music). Students may complete an Arts minor to the value of 18 units in lieu of elective courses.
- The major and optional minor are to be taken from different disciplines.
Arts Major
Courses to the value of at least 24 units from the following:
Students must satisfy the requirement for a major in accordance with the relevant Academic Program Rules for the degree of Bachelor of Arts.
Elective Courses
Courses to the value of up to 24 units may be taken from the following:
Elective courses chosen from those available in the Faculty of Arts, Business, Law and Economics (excluding courses offered by the Elder Conservatorium of Music) in accordance with the relevant Academic Program Rules for the degree of Bachelor of Arts. Note: Students may complete an Arts minor to the value of 18 units in lieu of elective courses.

Bachelor of Music Requirements
To qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Music a student shall satisfactorily complete courses to the total value of 72 units, with at least 18 units at Level III in accord with the Academic Program Rules for the Bachelor of Music. A student shall undertake one of the following majors:

Courses to the value of at least 24 units from the following:
