Overview

The Graduate Certificate in Counselling and Psychotherapy consists of core and elective coursework to introduce students to the broad theoretical foundations and skills of counselling / psychotherapy. It will provide an introductory pathway to training in specific counselling / psychotherapy skills and modalities or provide training in a range of specific counselling / psychotherapy modalities to experienced counsellors.

Usually the completion of a Bachelor degree is the minimum qualification for entry to the program but other equivalent qualifications will be considered.

The Graduate Certificate in Counselling and Psychotherapy is an AQF Level 8 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 0.5 years.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify the highest standards of contemporary counselling practice and research.
  2. Critically analyse the role of the counsellor in promoting client and community well-being.
  3. Practice, reflect upon, and evaluate core counselling tasks and ethical decision-making.
  4. Locate and analyse relevant theory, research and practice-based literature regarding best practice approaches to working with contemporary clinical issues for clients from diverse socio-cultural and ethnic backgrounds, including with indigenous individuals and communities.
  5. Exhibit skills of the highest order in interpersonal understanding, communication and teamwork.
  6. Demonstrate awareness of the need for continual professional and personal growth.

Conditions

Condition of Enrolment
Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Program Director or Delegate before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.

Program Maximum Duration: As specified in Table 1 of the Coursework Academic Programs Policy, this program must be completed within a Maximum Duration which includes any periods of non-enrolment, leave of absence or approved study at other institutions for credit towards a Program. 

Academic Program Rules for Graduate Certificate in Counselling and Psychotherapy

There shall be a Graduate Certificate in Counselling and Psychotherapy.

Qualification Requirements

To qualify for the Graduate Certificate in Counselling and Psychotherapy, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined  total of not less than 12 units, comprising:

  1. Core courses to the value of 6 units.
  2. Closed electives to the value of 6 units.
