The Graduate Diploma in Engineering is comprised of foundation courses and advanced studies. The foundation courses are designed to ensure that students acquire a level of expertise in the relevant specialisation. This program gives the opportunity to study technical courses at an advanced level.

Students enrol in one of the following engineering specialisations: aerospace, chemical, civil and environmental, civil and structural, electrical, electronic, mechanical, mechatronic or mining.

The Graduate Diploma in Engineering is an AQF Level 8 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 1 year.

Program Learning Outcome
1. Employ oral and written communication skills to communicate complex information and present persuasive arguments.
2. Exercise professional judgement founded on a strong commitment to principles of continuing professional development, ethics, sustainability and social responsibility.
3. Contribute pro-actively to the work of teams, both as a team member and a team leader, and maintain respectful, constructive and diverse team environments.
4. Plan and manage resources using systematic methodologies to create solutions to complex engineering problems.
5. Think critically and independently, apply logic and exercise judgement to create safe and sustainable outcomes.
6. Apply in-depth knowledge of the principles and methods of research, and of the research directions in the nominated field of specialisation to devise innovative engineering solutions.
7. Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of the natural and physical sciences, and mathematical and computer sciences, which underpin the nominated field of specialisation.
8. Apply an in-depth specialist body of knowledge and skills in the nominated field of specialisation.
9. Create innovative solutions to complex socio-technical problems using the established engineering methods, tools and processes in the nominated field of specialisation.

Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Executive Dean or delegate before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.

Program Maximum Duration: As specified in Table 1 of the Coursework Academic Programs Policy, this program must be completed within a Maximum Duration which includes any periods of non-enrolment, leave of absence or approved study at other institutions for credit towards a Program. 

Academic Program Rules for Graduate Diploma in Engineering

There shall be a Graduate Diploma in Engineering.

Qualification Requirements
Academic Program: 

To qualify for the Graduate Diploma in Engineering, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 24 units, comprising:

  1. Core courses to the value of 12 units
  2. One specialisation to the value of 12 units from the following:
    • Aerospace
    • Chemical
    • Civil and Environmental
    • Civil and Structural
    • Electrical
    • Electronic
    • Mechanical
    • Mechatronic
    • Mining
  3. A total of 12 weeks practical experience approved by the Faculty and of which a minimum 6 weeks should be under the supervision of a professional engineer. Students who have previously completed an approved 12 week period of practical experience are exempt from this requirement.
  4. International students with an IELTS overall score less than 8.0 are required to enrol in ENG 7057 Communication & Critical Thinking as one of their core courses.
