Overview

The Bachelor of Sociology (Honours) includes advanced coursework and a research project in which students produce an extended piece of work (thesis) on a topic chosen in consultation with an academic supervisor.

The Bachelor of Sociology (Honours) is an AQF Level 8 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 1 year.
 

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate a thorough understanding of a complex body of knowledge in sociology, and of the concepts, theories and methods of enquiry appropriate to the discipline.
  2. Apply highly developed creative and critical thinking to identify and solve problems within complex social contexts using advanced rigorous techniques of inquiry involving a variety of primary and secondary sources.
  3. Communicate at a high level of competency in a range of spoken and written modes and formats within Sociological and professional contexts in a variety of social, cultural and linguistic situations and contribute productively to group-based outcomes.
  4. Demonstrate career readiness and leadership skills appropriate for beginning professional practice including: 4.1 ability to work with an academic supervisor to design an independent research project that provides scope for self-directed research 4.2 project management skills required to successfully undertake different aspects of the research project in a timely and organised fashion.
  5. Extended information technology skills to access, ethically store, manage, analyse and present sociologically-based information and data, and to communicate effectively with others.
  6. Lifelong learning skills characterised by high levels of academic rigour, self-direction and intellectual independence.
  7. Multicultural and ethical competency.

Conditions

Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Executive Dean or delegate before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.

Program Maximum Duration: As specified in Table 1 of the Coursework Academic Programs Policy, this program must be completed within a Maximum Duration which includes any periods of non-enrolment, leave of absence or approved study at other institutions for credit towards a Program. 
 

Academic Program Rules for Bachelor of Sociology (Honours)

There shall be a Bachelor of Sociology (Honours).

Qualification Requirements

To qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Sociology (Honours), the student must satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 24 units, comprising:

  1. Core courses to the value of 12 units
  2. Research dissertation to the value of 12 units
