The program will provide considerable insight to the engineering, technical, management and regulatory issues associated with the biopharmaceutical industry. The main aim of this program is to provide an internationally recognised high-quality flexible curriculum. The Master of Biopharmaceutical Engineering will incorporate state-of-the-art developments in science, engineering and technology. The program meets the needs for Science and Engineering graduates requiring qualifications that are relevant to the global biopharmaceutical industry.
The Master of Biopharmaceutical Engineering is an AQF Level 9 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 2 years.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate specialised knowledge at advanced level of the background, market demand, and state-of-the-art practice of Biopharmaceutical Engineering, especially in the area of process engineering, technical, management and regulatory aspects of biopharmaceutical manufacturing and establishment of processing plants.
  2. Develop skills and techniques necessary for modern biopharmaceutical engineering practice. Be able to design and conduct bioprocess for biopharmaceuticals production, including upstream and downstream bioprocess design, process analytical technologies to meet Good Manufacturing Practice and regulation requirement for biopharmaceutical products.
  3. Develop the ability to apply core concepts in Biopharmaceutical Engineering to engage in scientific research or professional practice, and the ability to handle complex engineering and technical issues using critical thinking and data analysis. Understand the importance of lifelong learning.
  4. Be able to communicate effectively with a range of audiences while speaking, employing graphics and writing. Be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
  5. Be aware of the social, safety and environmental consequences of the work as a biopharmaceutical process engineer. Develop capability to construct and produce professional advice relating to the technical practice and project management of Biopharmaceutical Engineering.


Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Faculty before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.

Program Maximum Duration: As specified in Table 1 of the Coursework Academic Programs Policy, this program must be completed within a Maximum Duration which includes any periods of non-enrolment, leave of absence or approved study at other institutions for credit towards a Program. 

Academic Program Rules for Master of Biopharmaceutical Engineering

There shall be a Master of Biopharmaceutical Engineering.

Qualification Requirements

To qualify for the degree of Master of Biopharmaceutical Engineering, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 48 units, comprising:

  1. Core courses to the value of 18 units
  2. Research project to the value of 18 units
  3. Elective courses to the value of 12 units

Entry Requirements

Applicants who already hold a 4-year Bachelor of Engineering (BE(Hons) degree or equivalent) are eligible to enrol in this MBiopharmaE program.
Applicants holding a Bachelor of Science (BSc(Hons)) degree (or equivalent) or a Bachelor of Engineering (BE(Hons) degree or equivalent) in a discipline other than chemical engineering are eligible to enrol in this MBiopharmaE program but must undertake CHEM ENG 7060 Principles of Biopharmaceutical Engineering.

Core Courses
