Overview
This program provides students with a thorough understanding of contemporary media and how this complex industry is rapidly evolving under the influence of changing technologies and the different needs of societies around the world. Students may develop distinctive pathways through the program that allow them to develop knowledge and skills in relation to different facets of the practical and theoretical understanding of media. Students who complete this program may go on to careers in a wide range of organisations in the media industry or with employers who seek the specialist media experience of graduates.
The Bachelor of Media is an AQF Level 7 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 3 years.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Understand the impacts of changing media technologies in society, and demonstrate excellent research skills including analytical, conceptual and communications skills and written report skills.
- Apply the cognitive and critical skills necessary to produce, evaluate and interpret media texts and audio-visual and literary materials.
- Demonstrate skills in teamwork and the ability to work effectively on group projects as well as the skills necessary to develop positive interpersonal relationships in their place of work.
- Appreciate and manage their own personal capabilities through processes of self-appraisal, and demonstrate respect and mutual responsibility in sustaining productive relationships.
- Interpret professional, ethical and cultural policy issues in relation to the media.
- Understand and analyse media cultures from a local and global perspective.
- Demonstrate awareness and understanding of the role and effects of the media and new technologies in everyday life.
Conditions
Condition of enrolment
Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Executive Dean or delegate before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.
Program Maximum Duration: As specified in Table 1 of the Coursework Academic Programs Policy, this program must be completed within a Maximum Duration which includes any periods of non-enrolment, leave of absence or approved study at other institutions for credit towards a Program.
Academic Program Rules for Bachelor of Media
There shall be a Bachelor of Media.
Qualification Requirements
To qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Media, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 72 units, comprising:
- Core courses to the value of 30 units, including a course chosen from the Core Competency List to the value of 3 units.
- Media Closed electives to the value of 9 units, including a maximum of 3 units at Level I
- Media Closed electives are to be chosen from outside the major area of study
- If studying a Bachelor of Media with no major, Open electives to the value of 33 units must be chosen; OR
- If studying a Major to the value of 27 units, Open electives to the value of 6 units must be chosen; OR
- If studying a Major to the value of 24 units, Open electives to the value of 9 units must be chosen
