Overview

The Bachelor of Nursing program prepares graduates for employment as registered nurses, eligible for registration through AHPRA to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. Graduates acquire contemporary nursing skills and knowledge to enable beginning level practice in a wide variety of health care settings. The program blends extensive clinical placement opportunities with a high degree of academic rigour. Clinical placements facilitating this experience may be scheduled outside of usual University teaching semesters.

The program provides professional knowledge, skills and attitudes that underpin the role of the Registered Nurse and develops competencies for practice as determined by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).

Graduates of the Bachelor of Nursing program will also need to satisfy the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia’s English Language Skills and criminal history Registration Standards to apply for registration with AHPRA.

The Bachelor of Nursing is an AQF Level 7 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 3 years.

Program Learning Outcomes

  2. Assess individual and/or population health status, and where necessary, formulate, implement, and monitor management plans in consultation with patients/carers/communities and other health professionals.
  3. Promote, optimise and advocate for the health and welfare of individuals and/or populations.
  4. Retrieve, critically evaluate, and apply evidence in the performance of health-related activities.
  5. Deliver safe and effective collaborative healthcare.
  6. Reflect on current skills, knowledge and attitudes, and plan ongoing personal and professional development.

Conditions

Clinical Deed Poll: The University of Adelaide and the Minister for Health have a clinical placement agreement in place that allows the University to request clinical placements in SA Health facilities. As part of this agreement, students are required to complete a deed poll. A deed poll is an agreement between the student and SA Health to ensure patient information is treated with confidentiality and that the student has met the required clearances. Conditions of Admission

Criminal History Clearance: Students who undertake clinical placements, internships or research projects involving children or people who are ill, elderly or vulnerable are required to demonstrate clearance by producing a criminal history check, obtained through Department of Human Services (DHS). International students may be required to obtain a certificate from their home country.

Immunisation: Before any clinical placement, students will need to provide evidence of immunisation status. Students are required to have the appropriate level of immunisation required by the Addressing vaccine preventable disease: Occupational assessment, screening, and vaccination, SA Health Policy.  

Student and Professional Registration: Students are required to be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. The University registers students accepted into the program.

Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Program Director or Delegate before taking a Leave of Absence (LOA). Absence without approval will result in the loss of place in the program. An application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedure in place at the time.

Uniform: During clinical placements and in simulation sessions students are required to comply with professional dress standards.

Program Maximum Duration: As specified in Table 1 of the Coursework Academic Programs Policy, this program must be completed within a Maximum Duration which includes any periods of non-enrolment, leave of absence or approved study at other institutions for credit towards a Program. 
 

Academic Program Rules for Bachelor of Nursing

There shall be a Bachelor of Nursing.

Qualification Requirements

To qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Nursing, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 72 units:

  1. Core courses to the value of 72 units.

Work based learning / extra mural studies

Students must complete the allocated clinical placements provided of approximately 1280 hours. Successful completion of clinical placement is required for the following courses: NURSING 1007, NURSING 1011, NURSING 2007, NURSING 2011, NURSING 3005 or NURSING 3006 (Semester 1 of Year 3), and NURSING 3010.
