Overview
The Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) with Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences double degree prepares students for teaching in secondary schools. It is designed for students who are beginning tertiary study. The primary focus in the first three years of the double degree is on completing two teaching areas for teaching up to Year 12 level.
Students are required to have completed the requirements of the discipline degree to be eligible to enrol into the fourth year of the program.
The Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) with Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences is an AQF Level 7 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 4 years.
The program is offered as a double degree and students are required to complete both awards at the same time.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Apply knowledge and understanding of how students learn and how this may affect their learning outcomes in the Secondary School years.
- Know discipline-specific content and how to teach it. Know discipline-specific curriculum across two or more curriculum areas, and how to teach it.
- Design, implement and evaluate effective learning and teaching strategies for diverse, adolescent learners in Secondary Schools.
- Apply knowledge of relevant policy and practice requirements to create and maintain supportive and safe learning environments.
- Assess, provide feedback and report on student learning.
- Know about the important role of professional learning. Know about, and apply relevant professional standards with teaching professionals, parents/carers and the community.
- Design and conduct classroom action research.
- Apply the AITSL Professional Standards for Teachers at a 'graduate' level.
- Critically analyse and solve problems as independent self-directed learners.
- Demonstrate skills in the use of technology to solve mathematical and computational problems.
- Apply written and oral communication skills and teamwork skills.
- Demonstrate awareness of professional practice.
Conditions
Condition of Admission
Criminal History Clearance: Students must be able to demonstrate a successful National Criminal History Record Check (NCHRC) as it is required by teacher employment authorities in Australia and South Australia. A Working With Children Check (WWCC) is required prior to undertaking any professional experience/practicum placements which involves contact with minors (under 18 years of age). These placements are compulsory. International students will be required to obtain a certificate from their home country
Condition of Enrolment
Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Program Director before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.
Program Maximum Duration: As specified in Table 1 of the Coursework Academic Programs Policy, this program must be completed within a Maximum Duration which includes any periods of non-enrolment, leave of absence or approved study at other institutions for credit towards a Program.
Inherent requirements: Students are required to acknowledge their understanding of the University of Adelaide Bachelor of Teaching program requirements, specifically with regards to Professional Experience Placements – see https://able.adelaide.edu.au/education/study
Condition of Continuing Enrolment
LANTITE: progression into the fourth year of the program is subject to the successful completion of both the literacy and numeracy components of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE).
Academic Program Rules for Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) with Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences
There shall be a Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) with Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences.
Qualification Requirements
To qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary) with Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 96 units, comprising:
- Core courses to the value of 36 units from the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary)
- Courses to the value of 6 units from Bachelor of Teaching Curriculum and Pedagogy courses.
- Courses to the value of 18 units from a second Teaching Area.
The second Teaching Area can be chosen from:

- Italian*
- Japanese*
- Linguistics
- Mathematics

*Students who wish to undertake a second teaching area in a language are advised to seek advice from the Faculty prior to enrolling.
- Courses to the value of 36 units from the Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences including 12 units of core courses and 24 units of major courses:
- Level I courses to the value of 12 units
- Level II courses to the value of 12 units
- Level III courses to the value of 12 units
Note: Students may substitute one Level II course with a Level III course from those specified in the Academic Program Rules for the degree of Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences.
A major may be chosen from the following selection only:
- Computer Science
- Mathematical Sciences
Specific course requirements for the majors in Computer Science and Mathematical Sciences are provided in the Academic Program Rules for the degree of Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences. Students are not required to complete capstone courses for the Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences.

To satisfy the requirements for Bachelor of Teaching Core Courses (Curriculum and Pedagogy) MathsCompSci students must complete courses to the value of 6 units, in accordance with their chosen major and second Teaching Area.

To satisfy the requirements for Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences Courses students must complete courses to the value of 36 units.
Level I
Courses to the value of at least 9 units from the following:

Level II courses from the Academic Program Rules for the degree of Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences towards a Computer Science major or the Mathematical Sciences major only.
Level III
Courses to the value of 12 units from the following:
Level III courses from the Academic Program Rules for the degree of Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences towards a Computer Science major or the Mathematical Sciences major only.
Students are not required to complete a capstone course from the Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Sciences. -
Teaching Area 2
To satisfy the requirements for Teaching Area 2 students must complete courses to the value of 18 units.
Students must complete 6 units at Level I, 6 units at Level II and 6 units at Level III from one of the following teaching areas:
