Overview
The Diploma in Languages consists of studies in a single language over three years and is available to all domestic students who are enrolled in any undergraduate Bachelor degree or postgraduate studies at a recognised tertiary institution or have been awarded, or are eligible for the award of an undergraduate degree from a recognised tertiary institution. The languages offered are available at either beginners or advanced level.
The Diploma in Languages is an AQF Level 5 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 1 year or part-time equivalent. The Diploma in Languages will not be conferred until the requirements for the concurrent program have been completed.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Understand and express themselves with proficiency in one foreign language, using the four basic skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, and negotiate the cultural context(s) in which those languages are spoken.
- Apply creative and critical thinking to identify patterns of language use and solve problems relating to ways in which particular language systems function.
- Communicate effectively and with cultural appropriateness in a range of spoken and written modes and formats in a foreign language or languages, and contribute productively to group-based outcomes using those language skills.
- Demonstrate career readiness and leadership skills appropriate for beginning professional practice including lifelong learning skills characterised by academic rigour, self-direction, an international outlook and intellectual independence.
- Analyse and understand different cultural viewpoints and world views, and demonstrate the capacity to interact appropriately, effectively and in an ethical manner with people from other cultures.
- Develop an understanding of, and respect for other language and cultural systems including, Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander values, culture and knowledge.
- Develop information technology skills to access, store, manage, analyse and present information relating to a foreign language and the culture in which it is spoken, and to communicate effectively with others using the language.
- Appreciate and manage their own personal capabilities through processes of self-appraisal, and demonstrate respect and mutual responsibility in sustaining productive relationships.
Conditions
Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Executive Dean or delegate before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.
Program Maximum Duration: As specified in Table 1 of the Coursework Academic Programs Policy, this program must be completed within a Maximum Duration which includes any periods of non-enrolment, leave of absence or approved study at other institutions for credit towards a Program.

There shall be a Diploma in Languages.
Qualification Requirements
To qualify for the Diploma in Languages, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 24 units, comprising:
- A Major in a single language to the value of 24 units.
