Overview

The Doctor of Clinical Dentistry is a postgraduate coursework (Masters Extended) program available to both local and international students. The program prepares qualified dentists for specialist dental practice in the disciplines of:

  • Endodontics
  • Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology
  • Orthodontics
  • Periodontics
  • Prosthodontics
  • Special Needs Dentistry.

The Doctor of Clinical Dentistry is an AQF Level 9 (Masters Extended) qualification with a standard full-time duration of 3 years.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge, and advanced research skills including competency in investigative techniques and technologies relating to one or more disciplines in dental science.
  2. Demonstrate professional and ethically-appropriate research principles and workplace behaviours.
  3. Critically interpret, evaluate and synthesise understanding of background literature, and critically interpret and evaluate the methodology used and results obtained in a research context.
  4. Communicate scientific information including research context, approach, findings and significance clearly and concisely in written and spoken English.
  5. Work effectively in teams in small group and research contexts.
  6. Work effectively as an individual to plan and deliver outcomes.

Conditions

Condition of Enrolment: Students admitted into the program are required to maintain AHPRA registration and the appropriate  immunisations and clearances as a registered Professional.

Students will also have additional requirements for each Hospital site that must be met and maintained throughout their study.  

Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Program Director or Delegate before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.

Program Maximum Duration: As specified in Table 1 of the Coursework Academic Programs Policy, this program must be completed within a Maximum Duration which includes any periods of non-enrolment, leave of absence or approved study at other institutions for credit towards a Program. 

Academic Program Rules for Doctor of Clinical Dentistry

There shall be a Doctor of Clinical Dentistry.

Qualification Requirements

To qualify for the degree of Doctor of Clinical Dentistry the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 72 units, comprising:

  1. Core courses to the value of 6 units
  2. Research in the form of a research dissertation
  3. One specialisation to the value of 66 units from the following:
    • Endodontics
    • Periodontics
    • Orthodontics
    • Prosthodontics
    • Special Needs Dentistry

Work Based Training / Extra Mural Studies

Throughout the program, students will work in the clinical area as members of a health care team. Clinical placements maybe be undertaken at public or private health care facilities.

    To satisfy the requirements for Core Courses students must complete courses to the value of 6 units.

  • Research Dissertation

    To satisfy the requirements for Research Dissertation students must adhere to the following:

    Students must complete a research dissertation of not longer than 40,000 words. The time to undertake the research and prepare the dissertation is allocated within the core courses at Year 1 and the equivalent of 3 units embedded in each of the specialist clinical courses at Year 2 and Year 3.
