Overview
The Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy consists of core and elective coursework to introduce students to the broad theoretical foundations and skills of counselling / psychotherapy. It will provide an introductory pathway to training in specific counselling / psychotherapy skills and modalities or provide training in a range of specific counselling / psychotherapy modalities to experienced counsellors. The degree meets training requirements for practitioners as outlined by the Australian Counselling Association.
The Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy is an AQF Level 8 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 1 year.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Identify the highest standards of contemporary counselling practice and research.
- Critically analyse of the role of the counsellor in promoting client and community well-being.
- Practice, reflect upon, and evaluate core counselling tasks and ethical decision-making.
- Locate and analyse relevant theory, research and practice-based literature regarding best practice approaches to working with contemporary clinical issues for clients from diverse socio-cultural and ethnic backgrounds, including with indigenous individuals and communities.
- Exhibit skills of the highest order in interpersonal understanding, communication and teamwork.
- Demonstrate awareness of the need for continual professional and personal growth.
Conditions
Conditions of Enrolment
Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Program Director or Delegate before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.
Program Maximum Duration: As specified in Table 1 of the Coursework Academic Programs Policy, this program must be completed within a Maximum Duration which includes any periods of non-enrolment, leave of absence or approved study at other institutions for credit towards a Program.
Academic Program Rules for Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy
There shall be a Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy.
Qualification Requirements
To qualify for the Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 24 units, comprising:
- Core courses to the value of 21 units
- Closed Elective courses to the value of 3 units
