Overview
The Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice is an accredited practical legal training (PLT) program. PLT is a compulsory requirement to be admitted as a barrister and solicitor in South Australia. Completion of the Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice together with the Bachelor of Laws, allows for direct admission to practice in South Australia, and enables admission in other Australian states under mutual recognition rules.
The Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice is an AQF Level 8 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 1 year.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Apply knowledge of law practice across a variety of sub-disciplines of the law and conduct practical legal research.
- Employ advanced legal problem solving and analysis skills for the provision of legal advice and the drafting of non-litigious and litigious documents.
- Conduct client interviews, negotiate, mediate and advocate.
- Work in teams and interact with colleagues and the public in an ethical, professional and safe manner.
- Appreciate the legal and ethical obligations governing lawyers in the practice of law.
- Appreciate the operation of the law and legal structures in the context of social and cultural diversity.
Conditions
Condition of Enrolment
Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Faculty before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.
Program Maximum Duration: As specified in Table 1 of the Coursework Academic Programs Policy, this program must be completed within a Maximum Duration which includes any periods of non-enrolment, leave of absence or approved study at other institutions for credit towards a Program.
International students holding a student visa must not complete more than one third of the program in an online mode and must have at least one face-to-face enrolment per study period in which they are enrolled in an online course.

There shall be a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice.
Qualification Requirements
To qualify for the degree of Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 24 units and graduated with the Bachelor of Laws or equivalent, comprising:
- Core courses to the value of 18 units
- Elective courses to the value of 6 units
