Overview
The Bachelor of Languages (Honours) is a one-year program that includes advanced coursework and a research project in which students produce an extended piece of work (thesis) on a topic chosen in consultation with an academic supervisor.
The Bachelor of Languages (Honours) is an AQF Level 8 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 1 year.
Program Learning Outcomes
- In-depth knowledge of the culture and society of the country/countries whose language students study, and research capability as required to undertake higher degree study both in Australia and overseas.
- The ability to plan, conduct and present a sustained research project relating to the language and/or culture of the language community they study, and to do so in accordance with academic standards to be qualified to apply for higher degree research program both in Australia and overseas.
- The ability to communicate effectively and with cultural appropriateness in a range of spoken and written modes and formats in a foreign language, and contribute productively to group-based outcomes using those language skills where possible.
- To ability to take a leadership role with enhanced career readiness and qualification to further the study into higher degree research, with research capability and specialist knowledge in the area where the use of language(s) and deep cultural understanding associated with the language is required.
- The ability to apply sophisticated knowledge on language(s) and associated culture(s) to analyse and understand different cultural viewpoints and world views, and demonstrate the capacity to interact appropriately, effectively and in an ethical manner with people from other cultures.
- A sophisticated ability to develop an understanding of, and respect for other language and cultural systems including, Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander values, culture and knowledge.
- A sophisticated ability to access, store, manage, analyse and present information relating to a foreign language and the culture in which it is spoken, and to communicate effectively with others using the language.
- A sophisticated ability to appreciate and manage their own personal capabilities through processes of self-appraisal, and demonstrate respect and mutual responsibility in sustaining productive relationships.
Conditions
Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Executive Dean or delegate before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.
Program Maximum Duration: As specified in Table 1 of the Coursework Academic Programs Policy, this program must be completed within a Maximum Duration which includes any periods of non-enrolment, leave of absence or approved study at other institutions for credit towards a Program.
Academic Program Rules for Bachelor of Languages (Honours)
There shall be a Bachelor of Languages (Honours).
Qualification Requirements
To qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Languages (Honours), the student must complete an area of research (specialisation) with a combined total of not less than 24 units, from the following:
- Chinese Studies
- French Studies
- German Studies
- Japanese Studies
- Linguistics
- Spanish Studies
Combined Honours
Combined Honours in two languages, comprising 6 units of core courses from each language and a 12 unit thesis, may also be undertaken with the approval of both language departments.
