Overview

This program prepares students for a career in counselling by introducing them to the theoretical foundations and practical skills required. The program consists of core and elective coursework and combines theoretical knowledge and practical skills in counselling and psychotherapy. 

The Clinical Practice specialisation has been designed to meet the training requirements for practitioners as outlined by the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia and the Australian Counselling Association. In the second full-time year of the program (or equivalent) students must allow up to two days each week for Counselling Placement. 

The Clinical Trauma Practice specialisation allows students to focus on the area of trauma counselling and has been designed to meet the training requirements for practitioners as outlined by the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia and includes two placements within trauma-mediated or trauma-prevalent counselling settings in the second full-time year of the program. 

The Research specialisation provides a suitable background for students considering PhD candidacy. 

The Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy is an AQF Level 9 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 2 years.

  2. Locate, analyse, and apply relevant theory, research and practice-based literature to develop best practice approaches to working with contemporary clinical issues for clients from diverse socio-cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  3. Apply effective, creative and innovative therapeutic solutions to presenting client issues, including with indigenous individuals and communities.
  4. Work collaboratively with other health professionals to promote and contribute to the well-being of clients and communities.
  5. Exhibit and employ skills of the highest order in interpersonal understanding, communication, teamwork.
  6. Demonstrate commitment to continual professional and personal growth, through engagement with professional bodies, critical self-monitoring, and appropriate supervision.
  7. Identify and respond ethically to the socio-political and cultural context of counselling clients, valuing difference and promoting individual and community well-being.
  8. Undertake a leader or advocacy role in the counselling community, and for the continued development of the counselling profession.

Condition of Enrolment
English language requirements apply for international students.

Criminal History Clearance: Students who undertake clinical placements, internships or research projects involving children or people who are ill, elderly or vulnerable are required to demonstrate clearance by producing a National Criminal History Record Check. In addition, international students may also be required to obtain a certificate from their home country.

Clearance Certificates: All students intending to do placement(s), must provide current Department of Human Services clearances (DHS-Aged Care, DHS-Vulnerable Persons, DHS-Working With Children Check). Additional requirements around Through Their Eyes Training and RRHAN training will be provided prior to enrolment in a clinical placement.

Immunisation: Prior to commencing placement, students are required to be immunised and screened for all infectious diseases outlined in the Addressing vaccine preventable disease: Occupational assessment, screening, and vaccination policy 2024, completed through a GP provider of their choice. Students will be required to provide evidence of immunity or blood taken to determine their immunity status for a number of diseases – it is necessary for the GP to work through these requirements to complete the Certificate of Compliance in full. Students must retain all documents as evidence that they have been cleared to attend placement. Compliance requirements in community and residential aged care settings can differ, students will be directed by University staff accordingly.

Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Program Director or Delegate before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.

Program Maximum Duration: As specified in Table 1 of the Coursework Academic Programs Policy, this program must be completed within a Maximum Duration which includes any periods of non-enrolment, leave of absence or approved study at other institutions for credit towards a Program. 
 

Academic Program Rules for Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy

There shall be a Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy.

Qualification Requirements

To qualify for the degree of Master of Counselling and Psychotherapy, the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study with a combined total of not less than 48 units in either a Clinical Practice, Clinical Trauma Practice or Research specialisation.
