Overview
The program will provide a professional qualification for those who wish to work as psychologists within the applied health field. In particular, the aim of the program is to produce health psychologists who can apply psychological research and methods to the prevention and management of disease and illness; the promotion and maintenance of health; the identification of psychological factors contributing to illness; and the improvement of the health care system and health policy.
Successful completion of the program will provide graduates with an advanced level of training in health psychology, and enable them to apply for full registration with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA); to apply for membership of the Australian Psychological Society (APS); and with additional supervised work experience as prescribed by the PsyBA, graduates can become an endorsed Health Psychologist and apply to become a fellow of the APS College of Health Psychologists.
The Master of Psychology (Health) is an AQF Level 9 qualification with a standard full-time duration of 2 years.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Display advanced knowledge of the discipline of psychology (theories, evidence, methods, interventions).
- Demonstrate ethical, legal and professional aspects of psychological practice.
- Conduct psychological assessment and measurement.
- Display knowledge of intervention strategies and skills with competence in a least one intervention.
- Apply research knowledge and skills to health psychology practice.
- Demonstrate oral and written communication skills and effective interpersonal relationships.
- Demonstrate self-reflection and evaluation of own professional practice.
- Apply psychological knowledge specifically to health-related behaviours and treatments.
- Apply population-based psychological assessment, intervention and health promotion skills.
Conditions
Condition of Enrolment
Immunisation: Prior to commencing placement, students are required to be immunised and screened for all infectious diseases outlined in the Addressing vaccine preventable disease: Occupational assessment, screening, and vaccination policy 2024 , completed through a GP provider of their choice. Students will be required to provide evidence of immunity or blood taken to determine their immunity status for a number of diseases – it is necessary for the GP to work through these requirements to complete the Certificate of Compliance in full. Students must retain all documents as evidence that they have been cleared to attend placement.
Compliance requirements in community and residential aged care settings can differ, students will be directed by University staff accordingly.
Interruption of program: Students must apply for permission from the Program Director or Delegate before taking a Leave of Absence. Any extension of the leave without approval will result in the loss of place in the program but an application may be made to be re-admitted to the program subject to the admission procedures in place at the time.
Program Maximum Duration: As specified in Table 1 of the Coursework Academic Programs Policy, this program must be completed within a Maximum Duration which includes any periods of non-enrolment, leave of absence or approved study at other institutions for credit towards a Program.

Qualification Requirements
To qualify for the degree of Master of Psychology (Health), the student must complete satisfactorily a program of study consisting of the following requirements with a combined total of not less than 48 units, comprising:
- Core courses to the value of 21 units
- Research projects to the value of 15 units
- Work based learning / extra mural studies to the value of 12 units
